Can-Am on the Sovereign – 10/29/24

The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series headed to the American “Purple Mile” to run Can-Am this week. Ten drivers ran in the 4-on/6-off format over 20 heats, making for a long evening or racing. We ran the outside lanes first and then the inside.

Cody Pare has become a Tuesday night regular and has been giving perennial winner John Weaver a run for his money lately. He and Weaver were the only two drivers to break the 7-second barrier. John Esposito almost got there with a 7.094 effort on the yellow lane. In the total lap department, Weaver and Cody were the only drivers to get into the 190s, while Bob Hazelwood barely got into the 180s. The rest of the field sported lap totals from the 170s to the 150s.

At the move to the inside lanes, Weaver had logged 98 laps and held a slim one-lap lead over Cody. Bob Hazelwood, Dave Panich and Rob Hayes were in a race for the remaining podium spot with Bob’s 90 laps giving him a two-lap advantage over Dave who held a similar two-lap lead on Rob. Dan Savage led the rest of the field with 83 laps. Rolly Lapierre Jr. was running two laps back followed by Richard Payne, John Esposito and Joe Yates.

The second half of the race was similar to the first, with Weaver opening his lead over Cody to take the win. The rest of the field stayed in exactly the same order as the first half as Bob finished third to complete the podium.

Weaver’s 6.812 on orange was the fastest lap of the night while Cody was a tenth slower with a 6.921.
