What a time it was.

My first real, meaning running, insured and registered, car was a used 1965 Chevelle. Not the cool 2 door model or even a V8. It was a light green, base trim, 4-door with a 194 cubic inch straight 6 and Powerglide trans. It used so much oil that I'd go to Sav-Ons (SoCal discount drug store, R.I.P.) and buy 6 quarts of Ray Lube motor oil *each week*. Ray Lube wasn't the oil I'd use in anything I would care about but the car was a rolling oil change. The oil cost 2 for $.33.... yes, 2 quarts for thirty three cents. (circa 1972-73)... It got me around to work and to slot car tracks in LA and Orange Counties but that's about all.
It's life ended when I got a ticket for excessive smoke and about 2 weeks later was crashed into by a guy making a left turn against a red light.
Indeed, what a time is was....

One of the first "builds" I did with my Motley crew was a 66 two-door post Chevelle. We took the stovebolt out, and replaced it with a built 396, which was actually a 403. We were able to get a set of oval port heads from Gene Marmor, and I ordered the matching dual quad manifold from the Chevy dealer I worked at. Muncie M-21 and 12 bolt rear finished it out. This, along with my 63 Plymouth, a 62 Biscayne 409, and a 32 Ford coupe ruled the streets in my town the summer of 1968.
Nothing better than six guys getting together on a weekend to work on cars.
