2025 is just around the corner and that means Checkpoint Cup time here in SoCal!  The 2025 Checkpoint Cup will be held on January 23-26 at Piranha Speedway and Hobbies in Whittier, CA using pretty much the same format and racing schedule as last year.  7 races over 4 days and this is primarily an IRRA rules event with the major classes of Stockcar, GT Coupe, F1 and Can-Am being IRRA rules and RetroPro, Retro Coupe and LMP being SCRRA or local rules. All of the IRRA classes will be on the King track.

Thursday, Jan 23      IRRA Stock Car on the King track with tech at 10 AM.

LMP on the Flat track with tech at 6:30 PM.

Friday, Jan 24           IRRA GT Coupe on the King track with tech at 10 AM.  One GT Coupe race will be run and

the normal IRRA CR102 motor handout format will be used.

SCRRA RetroPro on the King track will follow with tech at about 6 PM.

Saturday, Jan 25       IRRA F1 on the King track with tech at 10 AM

SCRRA Retro Anglewinder Coupe on the Flat track with tech beginning about an hour after the end

                                    of F1

Sunday, Jan 26         IRRA Can-Am on the King track with tech at about 10 AM.

Note: Can-Am will be run using hand-out Chicagoland CR102 motors.

In the hand-out motor classes, GT Coupe and Can-Am, racers may purchase as many marked and numbered CR102 motors as they want and motors may be purchased the day before the event.

More information and details can be found on the Piranha Speedway and Hobbies Facebook site.   See you there!  good.gif

Here's wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Years from eveyone at Piranha!

I don't race any longer, but, why have these races gone to IRRA rules? It seemed when it was SCRRA rules, the attendance was larger.

Only asking. Thanks Bryan.

Tom... I think track owner decided that... but me not sure...

Sure would be nice if IRRA back east racers would attend, but as far as I know they came for only one event under the IRRA rules.

Myself and Clyde Romero have been out twice for the Zimmerman. Dom Luongo and Jay Guard were out once. If memory serves correctly Jimmy Williams and Felix Mueller were out once, and Brian Ambrose was as well.

Sounds like a reasonable effort by east coasters.

Agree Mike. Didn't get much response. Like I said, I no longer race, so, didn't expect much. Just wondering only.

    Tom,

We had a few guys travelling back East for some big IRRA races and it was generally felt that changing to IRRA rules at the major Piranha races would help encourage attendance at Piranha by IRRA racers nationwide. The rules are virtually the same in F1 and Can-AM and I applaud the racers who have made the trip!

We have been losing some Retro racers recently but I don't think it has anything to do with the rules changes.... :)

Hi Bryan,
I am now trying to plan a trip to the Checkpoint Cup.
Tentatively I have booked the flight and hotel.
The store hours of Piranha Speedway look like:
January 21(Tuesday) Closed
January 22(Wednesday) 14:00 to 21:00

Are they going to have the special store hours before and during the Checkpoint Cup?

I hope to race with you and other SoCal racers at the Cup.

Good Racing,
Haruki

Hi Bryan,

The handout motors for GTC can be purchased on Thursday and those for Can-Am on Saturday?
The handout motors for GTC cannot be used for Can-Am?

Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes for the coming new year.

     Haruki,

Yes, the handout CR102 motors in both classes may be purchased the day before. The marked and numbered CR102's must be used in the class they were purchased for so you cannot run a GTC motor in Can Am.

These are Richards instructions and I don't have anything to do with the IRRA races on the King track anymore... If you have any more questions please contact Richard at the Piranha website.

Looking forward to seeing you soon also my friend!!  :good:

In todays Checkpoint Cup action, IRRA Stockcar on the King track, saw a barnburner with Chance Overholt just nipping Duran Trujillo in an awesome race for the win!  Dom Luongo 3nd and Alex Freund 4th....

LMP on the Flat track tonight with GT Coupe and Retro Pro tomorrow...

It was a duel between Dom and Dale the whole race.

The A/W Coupes are going now on the flat track.
