Can-Am on the Royal – 12/10/24

 

The American Royal hosted nine MVH regulars and their Can-Am cars in this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. The field ran on the four outer lanes and then moved to the four inner lanes over eighteen heats, making for a long night of racing. Four racers rotated through the lanes with four marshals and one person to run the computer.  

 

 

Once again Cody Pare had the fastest car on the track and was in the lead from the start on his way to victory. By the move to the inside lanes, he had logged 196 laps, putting twelve laps between himself and second-place runner Bob Hazelwood. Rob Hayes was in the hunt with 182 laps, two laps behind Bob and five laps up on Dave Panich. There was a six-lap gap to Rick Pare in fifth place with Rolly Lapierre Jr. holding sixth place and trailing Rick by two, while in seventh, with 167 laps, Joe Yates was another two laps back. John Esposito was running eighth with 164 laps as Richard Payne, who was not having a great night, closed out the field with 160 laps.

 

After the move to the inside lanes the running order changed dramatically. Towards the back of the field, Joe fell off the pace, allowing Espo to move up into seventh place when time ran out. Similarly, Rolly got the better of Rick, moving up to fifth place. But the biggest change was at the front as Bob ran into (literally) a host of problems (other cars…well, actually, another car) in multiple heats, falling from his second-place perch at mid-race all the way down to fourth. To add to his frustrations, Dave bumped him from the podium by just one track section. On the other hand, Rob moved up to take second, five laps ahead of Dave but 22 laps down to race-winner Cody.

 

Cody again logged the fastest lap on the night, bettering his 3.439 fastest lap from the last time we ran Can-Am on the Royal with a 3.428 effort on the blue lane. Rob had the next fastest time, a 3.606 on orange, almost 1.8 tenths slower than Cody. Parity seems to have arrived for the Can-Am class on the Royal as the five racers in second through sixth places all posted laps in the 3.6s, all within about 7/100ths of each other.

 

The middle lanes were definitely the fastest way around the Royal on the night as seven of the nine racers posted their best times on either blue or orange.
