I was watching the news and they had a short on the Downtown Chicago department stores and how large the crowds were in comparison to years gone by. Christmas shopping has certainly taken a downturn, but also, I didn't notice that many happy faces. Not like I remember from my youth. And not that many kids. Family Christmas shopping is rare these days. Maybe a little family humor from back then will help.

Calvin & Hobbs only makes sense if your male. All the females I have ever known don't "get it".

My sister gave me a volume set of these comics. Classic stuff that sometimes isn't funny but makes you think (like the baby bird  (or was a racoon?) dying & God).

One of my favorites:

I agree that the strip is written from Calvin's (a boy's) perspective, but the girls are quite capable of "getting" and appreciating the humor.   I have a complete collection of the C&H books purchased as they were released.  They were the go-to "gifts for Dad" from my daughters when they were young.  And they loved them as much as I did.

My eldest, Annie, just borrowed two books to share with her daughter, Abbie.

My assets are to be split equally between my two daughters upon my passing, but there may be a custody battle over the Calvin & Hobbes collection.

Great stuff. As a kid I used to lay on the carpeted floor of our living room and read the Sunday funny papers. It was my treat for suffering through an hour and a half of church.

One of my favorites were the early Doonsburys by Gary Trudeau.

P.S. Once we were confirmed, communion Sundays took on new meaning. We would be called up pew by pew and get our wine and cookie. Then sit in a pew farther back, and go up again. By the end of the service, we were pretty loopy.

I also laid on the floor reading the funnies. They helped me learn how to read.

Print media has suffered much these past few years. One way to save money is to cut back on expenses like syndicated comic strips (along with personnel).

That's where I got the Calvin and Hobbes snips.

Reminds me of a day I came in to work an hour early to finish entering the production department time card info into the AS400. ( not my job to begin with. I was tool room manager then. )

On my desk I found a note from the owner of the company. " Please write mission statement and bring to 9:30 ISO meeting." They are still using it today, 35 years later.  :good:

You guys are talking about modern comics. I remember the classics, such as:

Dondi

Little Orphan Annie

Pogo

Lil' Abner

Dick Tracy

Terry and the Pirates

Gasoline Alley

Steve Canyon

Brenda Starr

Ally Oop
