After the 43 car, when I think Nascar, I think of the 28 Lafayette Ford.
A local hero, I'm sure Dave Crevie will have an Elmhurst story or two about him.

He was the fan-favorite of mine along with Fireball Roberts. Soon after, Geoff Bodine came along running Dick Armstrong's modified & several others.

I didn't know Fred well, other than in just passing. He was a lot older than us. I knew his folks pretty well, though. They owned the Shell gas station on the southwest corner of North Avenue ( HWY64) and Kingery Highway (RT 83). As teenagers we ran our go-karts in the vacant field behind their station. They would let us empty the gas pump hoses into our gas cans, and even give us a little gas sometimes. Such nice people.
Of course, Fred was our favorite racing driver back then. Our hero, so to speak. I'm pretty sure that photo in post #4 was taken at the gas station, It hung on the wall behind the cash register inside the station building. One time Fred left LaFayette Ford t-shirts for us, but they are long gone, worn to a frazzle since we wore them all the time.
The original building was pretty much where the current building is, but much larger since it also had auto repair bays. Red outline.
The vacant field became a dumping area, so the city planted trees all the way up to the edge of Kingery Highway. About 20 years ago, the city decided to develop that property, and there is now a tire store there. Yellow outline.
