Coupes on the King – 1/21/25

For the first time in over a year Coupes were up on the Gerding King in this week’s edition of the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series. The field of nine ran all eight lanes over eighteen heats in the 4-on/5-off format. Racing started on the outside four lanes and at mid-race moved to the inside four with one racer running the computer and four marshals on the corners.

Six racers opened a gap on the remaining field with Bob Hazelwood leading the way. His lead over Rob Hayes in second place was four laps at the move to the inside lanes while Dave Panich was running in third, three more laps back. Rolly Lapierre Jr. and Cody Pare were tied for fourth with 164 laps each with Rick Pare running sixth with 160 laps. Eight laps back there was a close race for the “best of the rest” as Joe Yates’ 152 lap total was good for a two-lap lead over Richard Payne. Dan Savage was running in ninth place with 148 laps.

As Bob and Rob continued to lead the way Cody came on strong on the inside lanes, breaking his tie with Rolly. With one heat remaining he was a lap down to Dave but managed to out-drive him to take the remaining podium position by thirteen track sections. Further back there was close racing for fifth place as Rolly held on to take the position by one lap over Rick while Joe and Richard finished on the same lap separated by just five track sections with Joe getting the seventh place.

Bob had the fastest lap of the night with a 3.954 on blue. Cody was the only other driver to dip into the 3.9s as he posted a 3.962, also on blue. In fact, the blue lane was on fire as the first five places and seven of the nine racers posted their fastest lap on blue.

Overall Finishing order, laps completed, best lap time, best lap lane:

  1. Bob Hazelwood      343/8      3.954    BL
  2. Rob Hayes             338/22    4.080    BL
  3. Cody Pare             333/7      3.962    BL

Does the comment above confirm the existence of "Speedy" Lang?

Or, is this simply a ruse foisted upon us by Robt. Hazelwood, through a burner phone,

and an Afghani Whats App account?

The legend of Speedy Lang is a long and storied tale, with many twists and turns.

Some say he exists, but many others, they doubt.

There have been rumours that he, or someone purporting to be he, may appear and race

in the second annual Modelville Hobby Retro Marathon, running under the Andover Audio livery.

Hard to know what to believe.

That's going to be April 11-13, in just a few months.  So, we may know more then.

I remain alive and well and race occasionally.

We still have my dad's old house on the space coast in Florida, which is where i am currently snowbirding, and will likely remain so until my new granddaughter arrives this summer. From the current weather, even beachside, you wouldn't think that it's really florida, though.

you'd be right, John! there is- a new one down in palm bay where an old friend races whom i haven't seen in years. haven't had time to go there yet but it's on the list. also, a buddy up in Geneva (the place where we used to race frequently near there is no longer avail.) wants to go down with me when he gets back from travel. so i should be seeing it in the near future.

there's also a couple tracks up by daytona but they're like 90 miles away.

yeah, Bill, we do have a little more of this yet to go, but it'd take a heckuva lot of wx down here in Satellite Beach to make us need a shovel like up in the panhandle! so far we just get 40's, with storms every few days but it's supposed to break next week.

what the Real PITA is down are the dam' hurricanes. a little cold blustery rain for a couple-few weeks i can take, but when you're threatened with losing your house, that's no fun at all. fortunately the kids moved to the mainland.

what Is fun is walking one house down so we can see around the corner and watching the rocket launches from the cape (20 mi. away). gal friend of ours is the range director, so we get some advance notice of what and when.
