I have mixed feelings on Slot Mods.
The products are amazing but I just don't see the point. Building like a model train layout bit by bit makes so much more sense to me.

Me too. But not that many people have the diversified skills to do it all by themselves. It's why model railroad clubs are so common. There are a lot of members, each with a special skill.
Also, as I have said elsewhere on this site, we have a different goal in the hobby industry. Younger folks don't want to have to build something, they want to use it right away. It's called instant gratification. Wreck it as soon as you get it, no waiting.
I'm not great at building model structures. So many of the ones on my layout were built by other people. Tim Polakowski built several of those. He entered these two stations in the model contests at NMRA national meets. Both took first place in structures.

Dave I understand what you are saying about instant gratification.
As you say some people can build things that some of us cant, or at least not nearly as well. Purchasing that item and incorporating it into your creation is still within the idea of building it bit by bit.
