Coupes on the Figure 8 – 2/11/25
Six racers headed to the Figure 8 to run Coupes this week in the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series. Racing was in the 3-on/3-off format allowing three marshals to work the corners. The four outside lanes were run first then the field moved to the four inside lanes, all over fourteen heats.
Cody Pare was posting sub-3 second laps in practice and clearly the early favorite in the betting. And, by the time we moved from the outside to the inside lanes, he had managed to build a five-lap lead over Dave Panich in second place, 227 laps to 222. Bob Hazelwood was turning faster laps than Dave but encountered several obstacles in the first half, putting him two laps back in third place. John Esposito had some guide/braid issues but still managed to amass a two-lap lead over Richard Payne to claim fourth at 199 laps to 197 while Dan Savage closed out the field with 191 laps.
Once on the inside lanes, Bob turned up the wick to move ahead of Dave and challenge Cody for the lead. When time ran out, they were both on the same lap and coasted to a stop separated by a couple of feet with Bob taking the win:
Bob's Margin of Victory
In the second half, Dave encountered some of the same obstacles Bob had run into in the first half and fell back into third place. Espo held off a late run by Richard to hold onto fourth place by less than a lap while Dan finished in sixth.
Cody was the only racer to run a race lap under 3 seconds, posting a 2.960 on blue. Bob bumped up against the 3-second barrier in multiple heats but couldn’t quite get there as his fastest lap was a 3.015 on green.
Finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane
