When old waterslide decals do not slide off in one piece is there anything to help it or is it no way too old?

dc-65x is the absolute master of the technique Paul mentioned above.

Once it has been removed from the backing and breaks in pieces or curls under, it's usually game over for me.

Thanks to Jairus for this tip, Testors Glosscote can hold old cracked decals together during application. How much to use takes experimentation.   :victory:

I've tried Micro sol and Micro set in the 70's and again recently. They didn't work for me then and didn't work for me now. And the Testors version just melted them

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try it for myself. But I guess I won’t be selling them on eBay and I have a bunch.

A mist coat of Testor's Glosscote seems to work every time for me - protects the decals just fine, but is still flexible enough to conform easily to most curves. No reason to overthink it. :)

Bill, if you are interested in buying the flames let me know. I have a lot more and a couple different colors.

Carter, I have a few old decals of my own, so I can't use more. Mine came from model kit building in the 60s, before slot racing.

Just put a disclaimer in the  Ebay description.  Very old and brittle. Recommend clear coat treating them before application.

I have brushed and/or sprayed old decals with Mod Podge to hold them together.  It seems to work.  At least long enough to get them on the car.

Neither one of those would help solve the problem of getting decals off the backing paper. Micro Sol softens decals so that they conform to the surface they're on. Micro Set is used to get a decal to "set" on a surface. The Testors version is probably similar to Micro Sol. Tamiya and Mr. Hobby also make similar products.

I wanted to be clear about what Jairus recommended to me and what I've been using on decals as well as other plastic painted parts.

Testors Glosscote #1261 is a clear gloss lacquer topcoat:

Is Testors Glosscote still available after the Rustoleum buy-out or available under another name?

I just found a lot of it for sale on Amazon, so it's still available.

Microscale, the makers of micro set and Microsoft, do a liquid decal film for renewing old decals.
