Yes.
I've raced on a Gerding King where the spacing was so wide (4.75", IIRC, could have been 5"), it was impossible to put your car on purple or black from behind the driver's panel.
I am not a doctor, but I played one as a child with the girl next door.

We had a lot of tracks in our shop raceway that had 4" lane spacing. Since we didn't race wing cars, nobody complained. And easy to marshal because only 37" wide.

4" lane spacing with 4.5" nascars worked very well, esp on a tri-oval track.

What was the spacing on the olde American tracks? We used to race Gp 20 wing cars on an olde Orange and they did ok. Are most of the new tracks 4 1/2"? I have a large track in storage with 4 1/2" and it seems a long reach to get to the back lanes.

If I'm not mistaken the original American King had 4 inch lane spacing was real interesting watching 2 F1's go through the bank, side by side.

All our tracks were custom built to order. Here are the lane spacings and width of tracks we used:
4"-37"
4.125"-38"
4.25"-39"
4.375"-40"
Later on we added an inch in width to our King tracks for some extra gutter space. Brian Crosby might have built some with 4.5" spacing but I never did.

Some time ago I wanted to find out when the rules changed from 3'' to 3-1/4'' max at the rear tires.
With Nicky's help we found the answer, this and wings is why the tracks were made wider IMO.
Anybody else out there know when the rules changed?

4" works for me.
One, you can reach all the way across an 8 lane track.
Two, learn how to pass and be passed safely.

...or the art of nerfing when someone's in the way.
