Stock Cars on the Royal – 4/22/25

Stock Cars were back on the American Royal at this week’s MVH Tuesday Night Retro race. 8 racers ran in the 4-on/4-off format, starting on the outside four lanes and then moving to the inside four in a sixteen-heat event.

Rob Hayes and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood were the fast guys, posting the only sub-4 second laps of the night. By the move to the inside lanes, Woody had logged 171 laps and was leading by six-laps over Rob while Gil Aubin was running in third and trailing by two laps at 163. In fourth place, Roland Lapierre Jr. was five laps off the podium and nine laps up on fifth place racer Richard Payne. At 146 laps, Dan Savage trailed by three in sixth with Joe Yates three laps further back in seventh while John Mills closed out the field.

After the move to the inside lanes, Rob closed the gap to Woody slightly, but Woody ultimately took the win by a five-lap margin. Gil fell off the pace but was able to hold onto the final podium position, thirteen laps behind Rob and only two laps up on fourth place finisher Roland. Richard finished in fifth while Joe got past Dan to take sixth.

Though he didn’t get the win, Rob posted the fastest lap of the night with a 3.924 on blue. Woody was the only other driver to break the four-second barrier with a 3.954 on green.

Driver, laps completed, best lap time and lane:

  1. Bob Hazelwood         338/13     3.954     GN

Woody:

You are not going to fool us with this bogus "Speedy" account on Slotblog.

Everyone knows that there is no Speedy, that he's perhaps a figment of too much inhaled

Deoxit, too many hours soldering in leaking capacitors, too much flux, too many

brake jobs into your lungs, and therefore brain.

If  this "Speedy" person shows up to race, with govt.-issued ID, well, that is when the vast majority

of the slot car racing community might be convinced of his existence.  And not before.

With all best wishes for your complete recovery,

Rob Hayes

Rob, I've seen Steve "Speedy" Lang race slot cars of all different types, except HO, since the mid-90s. I take it your above post was made in humor because Speedy hasn't been a recent regular retro racer. He, Woody, & a younger guy (Mike?) from the Framingham area were quite a force in New England 1/24 scale racing when that was popular.

clearly a humorous and tongue in cheek post. i have raced with and against all of you in the past and enjoyed every minute of it. in william f nolans anthology of motor racing stories, "when engines roar" (1964) charles beaumonts "the short unhappy life of the monzetta", is very humorous and a good read.

Thanks Bill.  maybe you mean Shawndy*, who used to run with us during the ANE-AMCA days and build our c-can motors? he worked for a tire store. only Mike i recall was a carpenter, good guy, who built his own chassis and got pretty fast.

Rob, maybe it was all the flux-u-ate. And i guess you weren't at modelville last november(?) when woody loaned me a can-am car to run on the figure 8.

Another famous racer who knows that i exist would be The good old Dominator, who has built me cars (and even worked on my house!).

there's also an element in mathematics set theory which is E, which stands for "there exists".  and if you spell my name in all caps, i have two of them: SPEEDY   Lol

but you, i dunno.

*  Shawn had complained that his name didn't end in "dy" like ours did, so we added it on for him.

ps    thanks John. pleasure was also mine.

another edit: can't find that book, john.

Speedy, yes, my misnaming was Shawn E. Just couldn't come up with his correct name. The Mike you mentioned above was Mike Clark. A very good carpenter who became a very good chassis builder. Later on, he designed & sold JRL chassis in both 1/24th & 1/32nd. I received a PM from Mike about seven years ago asking me if I could confirm a Rick Austin rumor about opening a raceway in the Pease Tradeport. Of course I couldn't. I first met Mike at the Lowell "Y" when I raced wing cars there in 1979-81.

Plus Rob if you check Speedy's profile you will see that he has been on Slotblog longer than you racing Retros.

Woody does not think that far ahead.
