Can-Am on the Royal – 5/27/25

Can-Am on the American Royal appears to be a popular class as fourteen racers turned out for this week’s Tuesday Night Retro race at MVH. It was great to see Peter Lentros back at the driver’s panel, joining a rather large group of the usual suspects. To move things along, racing was limited to the middle six lanes over a total of fourteen heats.

The early racing pitted Bob “Woody” Hazelwood against Dave Panich who were running in first and second until the fast guys rotated in. Rob Hayes, Gil Aubin and Cody Pare appeared to have the measure of the Royal as they were posting fast times and high lap totals. Cody ruled high lap counts as Rob dominated the fast times while Gil was just driving very consistently.

When time ran out, Cody took the win by ten laps as Gil managed to squeeze past Rob to take second by just over a lap. Woody and Dave ended up two laps apart with Woody six laps off the podium. There was a fourteen-lap gap to sixth place finisher Joe Yates who took the position by a very slim two track sections over Bob Blanchette. Four laps back, Dan Savage beat our Richard Payne for eighth place by one lap.

Third place finisher Rob posted the fastest lap of the race with a time of 3.581 on yellow. Woody put up the second fastest time of the evening while race winner Cody had the third best lap, a full tenth slower than Rob. However, Cody’s 279 race lap total bested the current NERR track record by six laps, proving you don’t have to be the fastest to finish first!
