Never knew there was such a thing as National Table Top Day. The gist is that you are supposed to do something that you can do on a table top. So I remembered, that way, way back, setting up a plastic track slot race set on a table was known as table top racing. Model Car Science magazine even had a section covering it.

My first slot race set was an Eldon figure eight. I bought it from Western Auto around 1958 or 59.

It ran on 3 volts, and came with two ersatz Ferrari open wheelers. 

 

Other sets available at the time were just as simplistic.

The home set cars have come a long way since then. But they still run on what is basically the same old "snap track".
