Can-Am on the King – 7/29/25

This week the MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series had the Can-Am class heading to the Gerding G7 King for the first time since December of 2023. Ten drivers were up to the challenge, running the middle six lanes with four marshals over ten heats.

Once again, John Weaver was the guy to beat with Bob “Woody” Hazelwood and Cody Pare the only other drivers within range. When side-by-side (with Woody the middle and John in purple) Woody was able to give John a run for his money. However, that all changed when two heats from the end Woody smoked his motor. After a shot of “juice”, it came back to life but wasn’t quite the same motor as earlier in the race. In the end, Weaver put eleven laps between himself and second place. Even with diminished horsepower, Woody hung on to second, finishing less than a lap ahead of Cody.

Behind the podium, Dave Pancih was running six laps off the pace in fourth but nine laps up on fifth place finisher Bob Blanchette. Bob’s chassis gave up the ghost with a couple of heats left and he finished the race driving Weaver’s car. Joe Yates, Dan Savage and Richard Payne were in a close race with Joe edging Dan by two laps for sixth place as Richard trailed by three. Steven Sacchetti and George Samuel were in a tight race for ninth with Steven finishing two laps up on George.

Weaver posted the fastest lap of the night and the only sub-4 second lap with a 3.970 on yellow. Woody and Bob were the only drivers close, both posting laps in the 4.0s (though Bob was driving Weaver’s car when he posted his fast lap).
