Can-Am on the Royal – 8/12/25

With MVH scheduled to close for a couple of weeks, everyone wanted to get some racing in as thirteen drivers showed up to run Can-Am on the American Royal in this week’s Tuesday Night Retro race. In addition to a large group of Tuesday night regulars, we were joined by Mike Auricchio and Tom Fischetti. And, in a rare turn of events, we ran all eight lanes!

Very early in the race (in fact first-lap early!) Woody Hazelwood lost a front tire which began a series of track calls that would permeate the entire evening, as would be expected with all eight lanes occupied.

Typically, John Weaver is the guy to beat, and tonight was no different as he was posting fast laps and avoiding the chaos, resulting in high lap totals compared to the rest of the field. When Cody Pare entered the rotation he was also fast, but not quite as fast as John, but appeared to be a safe bet to make the podium. Early on, Rob Hayes looked like he might challenge Cody for second, while the rest of the field was clearly outclassed by the three leaders.

When the dust settled, Weaver logged 382 laps, good enough for a nine-lap margin of victory over Cody. Rob fell off the pace as he rotated to the inside lanes but held onto third place, 18 laps behind Cody but eight laps ahead of fourth. With two heats to go, Bob Blanchette was running fourth with a two-lap advantage over Dave Panich, but he also struggled on the inside lanes, allowing Dave to take over the position and ending up four-laps to the good when time ran out.

There was a 21-lap gap between fifth and sixth places as Richard Payne claimed the title of “best-of-the-rest”. In seventh, Rick Pare edged out Woody by just one lap in the closest finish throughout the field.

Weaver’s 3.549 on green was the fastest lap of the night, almost a full tenth faster than Cody’s 3.628 on white. Rob Hayes and Bob Blanchette posted the third and fourth fastest times and were the only drivers in the 3.7s.
