Joe you should post a pix of that unique little wheely car here.

Pablo, at least it went to someone who knows what it is :) . The whole car is made up of parts from various ebay lots. Probably at least 8 or 10 different original owners as far as individual parts go :shok: . No idea on the motor. The crown is a Wilsons piece. I have a bunch of these in 36 and 40 tooth varieties. On some cars they feel tight and on others smooth as silk. I guess it depends on the pinion and if the relationship is truly 90 degrees between pinion and crown. Take it and race it,thats what it's for.

Yes it is - and you're the dirty rat who won my dragster!

Actually, I did bid on it, but can't remember where I dropped out - and glad to know that it stayed in the "family" Nice car in any case - was always surprised there weren't more Mabuchi-based dragsters like this (although I have found a couple). Got any ETs yet?

And Meilleurs Voeux pour la New Year - We're in Colmar, Alsace....

I believe the body came from a Monogram dragster model car kit. I had one in the mid-60s that was red plastic. :)

I forgot to mention that the drag motor has a 7 (?) pole arm in a Mabuchi 36D can with the Ram-Boochi kit installed!

Back to (interesting) toads then:

And here an unfinished chassis, possibly made for a stockcar, with a question mark about those any-idea-what-are-they-for things sticking up:

Edo, on the uncompleted chassis, those tabs could be for mounting an open-framed motor of some sort. I notice a possible brush clearance area on the three inners rails to the left. :)

Thanks Bill,

but if that motor on top of the pic is an example of open frame motor (that is an open frame motor, is it not?) I cannot figure out how it would fit the motor mount on the chassis

Posted Image

Also this motor mount is not even the right one for any of the can motors type (including Hemis):

Any suggestions?

Your E-ness, please try a Pittman DC66.
And please don't wash that dragster coupe, it has a lovely patina. :)

I think those holes are where the oars stick through. And, since the oars are only on one side of the right side of the chassis, the car will ONLY turn left; hence, it's definitely a stock car.

Excellent Tex! My best giggle for the evening - not that there's anything wrong with stock car racing of course....

Philippe is right Edo (drats, foiled again!): a regular open frame motor like the RP66 or DC70 or most others will have a tapped hole opposite the brushes, in addition to the one towards the back of the arm, plus the screw through the magnet, for three possible mounting holes... now, why he would want to put an open frame motor in this chassis is another question!

And the Ram-Boochi kit, justement, included the 7-pole Ram arm, in addition to the brush holder and brushes. This was an adaptation of their 7-pole arm for their own motors and equivalent Pittmans, but with a 3/32 shaft instead of the 1/8" shaft on the big motors... So they did tool up especially for this motor kit!

back by popular demand, a magnesium dragster:

Nope Edo - didn't even bother bidding on this one, since it's not a real magwinder, although it is passably pretty...

Well, I haven't sent any pictures in awhile, but since this one just arrived at my doorstep, thought I'd share (hot off ebay a month ago - 10 bucks!). To me this is very much in the Thingie tradition: a regular, carved up and lowered body, a fairly hot, simple chassis - who could ask for anything more? But I might open up a new thread in Thingies to get to the heart of the question. In the meantime, I present a period Thingified Mako Shark, fresh out of the (shipping) box...
Don

With a rear end like that, how could this be anything but a Thingie? Not to mention the mechanicals... spirit of 67, non? And of course the main point for me was the rear suspension - just a couple Dynamic accessories, but I thought it was something more exotic...

Edo,
I got the sister dragster to this one. But not restored. Just a light cleaning.

I like the rail-work around the front axle. One rail wraps around over the top. A second rail makes a 90-degree turn and is soldered to the bottom of the axle. The third rail angles outward roughly 45-degrees and meets up with the axle and the second rail. Good ideas for filing away in the gray matter.

A few more strange ones, starting with one in hommage to Jairus' beautiful Paxton Turbine with the layshaft drive - here's a 60s version, in 1/32, but again with a 26D... and of course a drop arm!

Now a couple more experiments on getting the power to the road, and keeping those front wheels on the road too... with my thanks to the donors and/or sellers of these wonderful chassis!
