17.  Don't remember 9, 11 and 18.  But then I've been around longer than most of you other whipper-snappers...

19, I missed #9. I had an older brother Eddie, who was sort of crazy. But I don't think he's the one mentioned in this list.

When I first saw that, I remembered all but the mobile rides and Johnny-on-pony. We didn't have those. But the mention of

the F.W. Woolworths brought back memories of after school dates, cherry phosphates, Green River, and ice cream sodas.

Right next door was the York theater where we got 3:30pm matinees for 25 cents. I had a cousin that lived in Glen Ellyn,

and we would ride the Chicago and Northwestern commuter train there and back to Elmhurst. If we rode in the vestibule,

the conductor wouldn't charge us. On hot days we could beg a chunk of ice from the Bowman Dairy man.

But the really great thing about being a geezer is that we can do stupid things and blame it on dementia.

Woolworths had great cafeterias with waitresses in nice uniforms. A cake or a pie on every counter.

About the same.17 2/3.

Again,  I missed #9 and #14.

Like Pappy alluded to, Crazy Eddie was regional, and growing up in Chicago, too big/urban, for doctors who made house calls.

On #18, never heard of "Johnny on the Pony."

On #18, that was 2 of the 8 types of baseball I played in the summer.

1-running bases

2-against the wall, against the steps, ledge ball, wall ball, were all the different names we had for stoop ball.(home steps or architectural detail on wall of grammar school)

3-16" slowpitch softball on the street

4-quarter rubber, slow pitch , school playground

5-dime rubber, fast pitch, school playground

6-wiffle ball, slow pitch, back yard or alley

7-league/hardball, slow pitch, park

8-little or pony league, league/hardball, fast pitch, park, with uniforms, umpire, etc.

PS-when did cigarette vending machines go out?

It seems like they were around pretty deep into my adult years.

We could see a matinee for 15 cents. Popcorn and a Coke were 5 cents each. My parents would give me and my older brother a quarter each and send us to the movie theater which was two blocks up the street. I think that's how my other three brothers and my sister happened.  :laugh2:

They still had the mechanical cigarette machines in the late '60s-early '70s. There was one at my first full-time job

that would always jamb when you pulled the knob. It happened once too often, and some employees carried it out and

set it on the railroad tracks that passed the shop. A train came and hit it, scattering ciggies all up and down the tracks.

There was a segment on the news about how much allowances for kids have risen. Some university did a study, and

they said the average for a middle-class family is now $30 a week. In 1994 (25 years ago) the average was $8 per

week. This was even a discussion at my neighborhood's block party. Some families are giving their teen-aged kids

$100 a week, plus paying $200 or more per month for cell and computer accounts. Those were the same people

who jumped all over me for saying I shouldn't have to pay taxes into the school system now that I am retired and on

socialist security. They feel their kids are partly my responsibility.

Mechanical Cigarette machines were still around in the early '80's. In 1980 or 81 I crewed for an IMSA team at Daytona. Cigs at the time were $.60 a pack in ATL. I'd sworn I'd quit at $1.00 a pack.

The hotel I was staying at had a machine in the hall. It was $1.00 a pack.

I bought them!

Cigarette vending machines can be purchased at the Chicagoland Antique Advertising, Slot Machine and Jukebox Show held twice a year (spring and fall) at the 62,000 square foot Lake County, IL Fairgrounds Event Center.

My article about the spring show can be found here: https://www.pinballn...ow-spring-2019/

When I had the Ferrari I only got pulled over once for speeding. The first thing the cop asked was what kind of car it was. He was

pretty young, probably a car guy, and had a lot of questions about it. When he came to the inevitable question of why I was speeding,

I just answered "What would you do with a car like this?" He let me go!

Not a joke, but a true story. A friend of my brother's was stopped for speeding on the Maine Turnpike by a state trooper. As he rolled his window down, the trooper says "Let me see your pilot's license."  That friend then opened his wallet & much to the trooper's surprise, produced a valid pilot's license. The trooper let him go with a verbal warning..
