I tried to buy a proslot dyno when they were first announced, but got no response. Later found someone willing to sell me a used one for $600. But he never actually came through and arranged to send it.

Standing offer to pay original price for a fully functional used one if any one is willing to part with it.

you can also look for the RSR (Rocket Scientist Racing) Dyno that was made for RC car motors about 18 years. The only change that will need to be made is the flywheel needs to be modified and some small program changes. (i helped develop this back in my RC days) I wonder if Ken jones still has my prototype?

hjames,
I still have one of the original RSR dynos. Are you the guy who worked for Morton Thiokol ? I remeber talking several times with someone who worked on the design of the dyno and I believe that was where he worked. Anyway, could you help me with conversion to slot motors? I didn't think it was possible. The dyno still works perfectly. However in todays R/C world brushless motors dominate and dynos are fading away.

Thanks,

Mike

In another thread PdL mentioned that at one time GM had a 1/24 scale wind tunnel...

Motor dyno's... wind tunnels... Who will be the first with a seven-post chassis dyno... :laugh2:

Just hold it under the faucet and see how the water flows or sprays all over the place.

A 1/24th scale in home wind tunnel is actually very simple to create. However it's just like the PS dyno, there's no substitute for putting it on the track and testing it there.

Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner!!!!!

If it don't pull to the bank, pull through the bank and pull out of the bank....... it ain't gonna run no matter what the dyno tells ya.

Or, as one big time 1:1 racing engine builder said to me once... "We don't race dyno's"!

That said, wind tunnels and dyno's would seem to be neat toys... :)

At $600 for a dyno, I would need to talk to a bank, or rob a bank................. :laugh2:

i agree with Ron (who said that) years ago when i thought of using a dyno again there were too many variables that could not be accounted for . Power and amperage (all tracks are different) motor could be good on this track and a dog on that track . Dyno would have to be hooked to track through controller terminal ( dont think track owner would like that. cant use long cables because too much resistance (cables running from track to pit. there are many more but i dont want to bore you. Best way built it right, run it. look at clock, repeat all steps to make sure. IMOHO. but then again im still new at this game :) take it for what its worth

RC Dynos work to a certain degree as they are based on 7.2 volts and that decreases as the battery loses charge.

Slot car power is all over the place track to track due to batteries, chargers, power supplies, number of taps, wire size, etc etc etc. What works at one track usually doesn't at another track. That's why guys are always building more motors all the time of looking for another motor to run better than what they already have.

If you ran at one or two tracks only, kept good records of voltage, etc, kept good record on the motors..... you might figure out something for those track that wold be beneficial over time.

If dyno's worked for slot racing..... EVERYONE would own and have one and it would have been that way for years now.

You guys obviously agree, but you have not sold me. Not to be disrespectful, but

1. I have a chassis dyno that I bought maybe 15 years ago. It is one of my favorite slot purchases of all time. No, it doesn't tell me which setup will be a winner. But it shows vibrations under power without the time and expense of getting it on the track. It shows relative motor speed under load. And it is almost 100% accurate at showing the dogs. The fastest motor is rarely the fastest on the track. The slowest motor almost assuredly is. My chassis dyno is not for sale at any price.

2. The problem with using a track as the dyno is that about 80% of racers don't ever get as much track time as they really want for tuneup, especially before a big race. That was true of me when I raced at a raceway that I could only get to on race nights. Tough to tune that way.

3. I now have my own club track in the basement. I own the fastest times. For me its not about the fastest motor. It is about tinkering and experimenting, which to me is the most fun part of slots.

But all of this begs the real question you guys have to answer:

I have been trying to buy one of these for 2 years. If they are of no value, why is it that no one who has one wants to sell it?

I don't build motor's and I think that is what the dyno was made for? I could see the use of it if you are a motor builder but not for the regular guys on the track? ;) I think I could tell if I got a hot motor or not they would pass me on the straight away.

We had a small wind tunnel in middle school for the balsa co2 cars. Had a smoke tube and scales and everything. Wish I had that thing now...it would benefit a dragracer!

Maybe Dan Da Bella can jump in here..............I do not think very many Pro Slot Dyno's were made and those that got 'em want to keep 'em.

As I recall, Tony P converted some type of Trinity RC Dyno for Slot Car use.
