A 1962 Lola Mk IV as raced by Roy Salvadori in the '62 British GP... Still need to add mirrors, and complete a few detail bits, but getting there.

Chris,

This is a real beauty, but the color was a much darker blue and metallic at that, for the works Bowmaker-Lolas, was it not? :)

Here is a great link on their history.

My late friend Peter Bryant, the designer of the famous Ti22 Can-Am car, was the mechanic-engineer for Surtees and Roy in the Bowmaker team, and tells the story in his wonderful book about his life, Can-Am Challenger.

He was a very nice man with a fabulous sense of humor, and we regret his loss a lot.

PdL...

The color is probably "off", but all my old Louis Stanley GP review books have only B&W photos, and the color photos of the current historic cars all look different depending on photographer angle, light, etc.

The attached photo is the same car as the pic you posted, and every one appears different.

I had the paint mixed at a local 1/1 custom car shop, and it is a compilation of all shots... in the end, I agonized over the shade being "light", but went ahead.

A few of my old mates have told me that it was not however a metallic shade.

Hi Chris,

I was lucky to see the car run, then and now, and it is indeed a much darker blue than even the picture I posted leads one to believe. In fact, this old Solido die-cast toy from the early 1960s shows the exacting and correct color:

Of course one would need the orange band on the nose! :)

Very Nice work !!

Always nice to see somethig Just that Bit different !!

Go the Whole Hog,..add some Suspension detail !!,.. :)

The Colour?,..Wow Phillipe, I am somewhat amazed that the Real colour is Like the Solido Model,..(Having Never seen the Real car either ofcourse), I Too would have always figured it to be a Much Darker/duller shade and Not anything like that level of metallic content in the Finish,..well,..as stated.,..from Period pictures, it is Very hard to tell,..Especially as it was Probably an Overcast Day in Nearly ALL the Pictures as well !!!

Hey ain't ya Glad you aren't trying to Paint a McLaren and get the colour correct !!,..lol

I think you may be right here, Mr P - It's hard to tell from Chris's photo's because sometimes the light brightens the blue.

I've just finished one of these cars with a Beardog chassis and I used Tamiya TS-15 Blue with the red part at the nose being TS-8. I don't think there was any metallic in the paintbbut I could be wrong. I looked at some old photos and I'm close. Remember, the photo is old and color is not quite correct.

Great job on the car, Chris. It's coming along real good.

Did the gear box come with your body?

Hey, Philippe, is that John Surtees at Zandvoort in the picture above?

Hi

I have told the story about using IPMS to get chips. The chip I got for this car was much like the Cooper Blue/green but as a metallic.

Like Rush, 97.8% of the time! :laugh2:

Seriously, I am at an advantage here, I was very lucky to witness many of these races since... 1948 when my dad took me to the 24-hour of Le Mans at age 5, and to every edition until I was old enough to go by myself, plus the French, Belgian, and sometimes Italian and British GPs...

And yes, of course it is Big John in the Mk4 on the picture above. John was barely getting off the MV 4-cylinder grand prix bikes and getting into auto racing, very quickly proving to be the equal of the best. :)
