# 50 was Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. of Houston Texas

# 65 was Jerry O'Neil of Auburn New York (better known to ARCA fans)
That's thirty minutes away. I'll be there in ten.

The very FIRST nascar test at Indy only had, if I remember right, 7 cars, and it was on a Monday after the Michagan race. The #2 car, #3 car, #17 car, #18 car(?), # 11 car, and I don't remember the other two off the top of my head. I was there, and the track guards could now believe the amount of people that showed up at 6.00am waiting to get into track. I remember all the fans on the pit side grandstands chanting WE WANT A RACE!!! WE WANT A RACE!!! Bill jr. looked like a cat that just swallowed a bird with that little smile on his face. Tony George had a little hand held calculator, and his fingers were running all over that thing, then they both smiled at each other.
I remember couple of oldtimers down by turn one that said to each other, "Boy I bet Tony Hulman is rolling over in his grave right now"
That was back when nascar was still real racing and not this follow the leader stuff.

Bob my mistake ,this is the first open test and not the tire test . driver#65 used to race at Illiana and Grundy.

first test in 1992 had 9 cars. The next test had 35. Before the test in 1992 I believe Tony George took AJ's stockcar around for a couple of laps?

O'neill did not qualify for the race and AJ if I remember correctly finished pretty well.

AJ ran his car out of gas at the first Brickyard so he could be shown leading laps. Not sure what his overall finishing position was, but I would bet it wasn't very high

AJ finished 30th at the 1994 Brickyard after qualifying 40th, he was still running at the finish.

There was only one racer who qualified into this race that wasn't a U.S. Citizen... do you remember who?

IIRC, weather was a big factor that day (8/6/1994) and unfortunately we had parked in the Coke Plant lot which was a long trek back and forth between the intermittent morning rain showers.

To finish 30th for AJ was a good thing, in my opinion. Geoff Brabham was the only non American in the race, drving for Kmart I believe? John Andretti drove for Kmart the next year, I believe I have a model of that car somewhere. I always liked John Andretti, especially when he was very good at the end of the 90's, well good for him anyway. They just replayed this race not to long ago on ESPN Classics by the way. The race seemed so much more interesting than nowadays.

Question: Does anyone remember who the commentators were for the race? Hint one of them should be an easy hall of famer.

I'm sure "Buffet" Benny Parsons had to be one of the commentators- and you are right, if there is any justice, he should be nominated for the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.

My other guess would be Bob Schacht.

However, his car # was always 75, but I think he had to reverse it to 57 when he raced NASCAR...

No sorry. Driver of 65 was from N suburbs of Chicago. He attemted to qualify in a bunch of races but only managed to get in a 125 qualification race at Datona and the Winston open. It all ended when he sold cocaine to an undercover cop. :shok:

Bingo Jacob! Illiana Speedway was close enough to where i lived i could hear them, hung out there and had friends that raced late model. Early 90s he came on the scene and was a mid pack runner at best. He seem to have 1st class stuff and a fancy hauler, never had a sponsor on the car.The 94 Tony Bettenhausen100 Classic was a hammerfest with a large shmozzle taking out all the fast runners but Frank Gawlinsky who cruised to his 3rd or 4th title. Seligman was the best of what was left and finished 2nd. We were all pretty shocked when he bought nascar cars and started going down there. We had a guy named Duke Nalon III ,nephew of the racing great, who talked all the time of going Nascar. He didnt have it either,"Have another beer , Duke". We allways made sure to catch nascar qualifying to watch him flounder. Must have cost a fortune. Then he shows up for the next Bettenhausen race and didnt make it out of the heat race and loaded up and split. The last i saw of him was the tail of a half million dollar car hauler going out the pit gate. He got busted right after that and we all had a good laugh, so thats where the money came from!

Mr. Al, Drugs and motorsports. How about Randy Lanier, they brought over 300 TONS OF POT to the Chicagoland area back in the day. I remember during the trial that they admitted they outgrew using semi trailers to bring the pot up to Illinois, AND THEY STARTED USING BARGES ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO BRING THE POT UP TO ILLINOIS!!!! The Whittington Brothers, John Paul Jr. and John Paul Sr. All of them had a little problem with selling drugs. The Feds have been looking for John Sr. since his second wife disappeared years back. How much coke did Steligman sell to the Feds?? Couple keys??
I still like the 300 TONS of pot, the jury got a BIG kick out of that!!!!!!
