Here is a great article by Bob Emott on Nutley getting started
this shows the old 165 Engleman Flat Corners with the short straight in the donut Tony P. & the locals
new the secret of going fast in that donut....I only got to race once on that track
thats where i started racing with the Pro Boyz 1968 competition was intense.
It was the first time i saw the racers put Glue on all the corners for a race
I thought that was crazy cool & it worked!.
Nutley was noted for having the best group of young kid drivers I ever saw
I think the great family atmosphere made by the Tango family was the trick. ;)

Great memories... Loved that engleman. Great home track advantage for us Geeks. When I first went there they ran the track the wrong direction until PVA & Emott showed up and told Mike to change it.

A 165' King... R-Geo had an Ogilvie that size.

Love the 90... less track calls under the bridge?

Square donut... local advantage...

Great memories...I had forgotten about that track (I had assumed it was always a King) until Tony mentioned when the roof leaked and ruined the Engleman.

Leaked right over the lead-on and the water ran down the slots on the main straight. By the time Mike got in 2 days later it was all warped...

I remember when we got the King track. It was pretty crappy. We ran it just for a short time in stock condition. Than one Saturday night Bob Emott and Phil Rubin said it sucked and we should redo it. Off came the braid and Bob decided epoxy would make the perfect surface. Now the issue was would the epoxy stick to the wood with years of glue on it. We spent a week washing the surface with chemicals and ever day the glue would again rise to the surface. It was a site to see all the pros there helping out with Phil Rubin sitting in the race directors booth giving orders.

After a week with zero progress, Bob and Mike decided to go for it and epoxied it anyway. The rest is King track history. John Gorski was the first to run a lap in anger and was like .30 or more faster immediately..

Tony became "Tony P" because Mike Sr. couldn't fit his whole name on the lap counter.

The local racing there was as good as it gets. Gorski is right when he said this raceway had some of the best young racers in the country. I forgot about Sammy until I saw the article again. He always had a really cool black leather jacket.

Barry_D.jpg

Here is a pic of one of he nicest guys I ever met in my life who is in the picture in this post next to me. This one was taken in 2008 when he came to one of our races at Zeps.

Here is what Tony P wrote at that time..

"Barry was one of the Nutley regulars and probably spent more hours at the track helping kids and other racers than he ever spent working on his own equipment. Barry used to always be the one you could count on for a ride home or to a race. Barry saved me many a late night bus ride home when I was a kid."

I have spoken to him since and at 84 he is as spry as ever. He doesn't live far from SpeedZone so I am trying to get him to come to one of our races again.

And Tony..yes...he still has that 68 Mustang that he drove in the great races to the Lido Diner.

In reading the recent history of the Teenager Revolution, I came upon this:

Brady continued until 1971 when Tony P took the Nutley Raceway over from Mike Tango. That was in February, one week after the 2nd Hinsdale Manufacturer's Race (where still 164 racers entered, despite the fact that most pros had already retired).

You took over Nutley Tony?

It was the "High Rolls" later on after that. And man..when those paisley shirts came in Ed Sohl used to wear some outrageous stuff to the races. That's back when Mike Katz had his "fro" goin on. :D

Remember the short period when one of the magazines complained about they way the pro looked and Jerry & PVA showed up in suits... If they could only see wing racers now. LOL.

Other than the three NAMRA races I won at Nutley :) I remember running in a very big evening race where Jerry Brady and I qualified poorly and had to move up through several consi's. We ran 1,2 through two consi's until the first consi that Jerry won and I ran third missing the move up to the semi. I should have put new tires on!

Wasn't there an "Oops" situation when one of the magazines (Car Model?) written by a prominent racer (Ray Gardner?) made reference to a certain raceway owner's girlfriend, causing much concern by his wife? Or is that story another slot urban ledgend?

That's a sweet body, John! And the mirror detail of the red car BEHIND is fantastic! I notice you didn't say you WON that Concours... (?). That's hard to imagine; yours is a beauty!

Check out the first car in post #4 of this thread. Look familiar? I won Concours with it at DA Sano II: http://slotblog.net/...showtopic=10836

I really miss those days at the Nutley Track, especially when i set off a rocket motor in the pit room. Tony P came in the back and said watch out Tango doesnt see the smoke. :shok: ....Just for kicks me ,Beltz and Wayne would run our cars backwords out of the bank down the straight and into the wall just to see who built a better car.........Now I just do it in the right direction :laugh2: :laugh2:

Howie, I remember Richie, he was a tech at some Chrysler dealer on Long Island and worked on Bruce Clark's Hemi Charger when we used to run it a NY National Speedway. I recall Richie telling you that a lot of the bolts on your Vette's engine were "Marked" as if it had been worked on before. I forgot that Mike Tango had helped you out with that.

Noose caught me signing up :shok: so the cats out of the bag, it's nice reading all the good things your old friends have to say about you, even if most of them are not true.
Believe me I wish I had done all the things that I have been given credit for. the truth is everyone of you made it possible for Nutley raceway to be a success I was closeist with Tony P. and Bob Emott, who booth worked or ran Nutley a lot of the time. I was also very close to Gorski, John Gorski Sr., Noose and the rest of Team Nutley. I think of you often and have spoken to some of you thru the years, boy how they fly by.

Tony do you remember the aricles we wrote for car model magizine? who took the trip with me to race in california? Bob Emott I remember you making a hand controller for RC cars with a steering wheel on top at our Belleville shop, amost like they use today.

Will post again soon
Thanks

Hello Nutleys, :laugh2:

I have posted some of the Nutley photos before and will try to get them up again  As stated above the local racing was awesome and wish Big Jim (my ride at the time) had gone more often, it was usually for the Saturday races after the Glen Oaks racing went flat. Friday's was Buzzi's

Enjoy

Thanks for all the kind words" Happy New Year to all of you.

I still have a bunch of fond memories from Nutley Raceway, you
guys have just jogged an old man's memory so I looked for some pictures
that I had, funny how I saved them! I'm not the saving type.
I found quite a few with most of you in one or more, when
I get to work and have some time I'll scan and post them.

Some of you have asked where I reside now, I still live in North Jersey,
with my better half Veronica  we got married after the Nutley days have
raised five children and now have eleven grand childern.

Some of my hobbies are street rods, offshore speed boats, Fly fishing,
hunting, RC Flying and watching my grand children play sports. :D

Thanks
