A very special person stopped in at our Retro East race this past weekend to see old friends and meet new ones.  Barry "Barry D" DeShong at a spry 90 years old joined up here with some of the folks from Nutley.

Left to right:  John Streisguth, Ed Sohl, Barry D, Noose and Jersey John Molnar

I am amazed at pictures. It was a time in my life I will truly remember. The action, the friends, the antics, the innovations that came so fast, The original Team Camen (We are still in touch), Team Nutley. Just think, It was only 40+ years ago.

I had the honor of meeting Barry D at the RE race. As you can see from his hat he is still proud of his service as a Monfort Point Marine in WW2.

I thanked him for his service as there are fewer and fewer WW2 veterans left. It was great to meet a piece of US (and Slot car) history. We should all look so good when we pass the Nine O mark.

Cheers

Still a not so secret, secret. Stick-brown is just some brown stuff mixed with other stuff at a specific ratio. For more info contact Joel. LoL

Right.  That wasn't the secret, John.  The secret was "mother's love".  When you made that stuff in a Charles Chip can on a hot plate in your mother's basement, it smelled like you had V-8 on fire down there.  Oh, man, did she love you!

This race was about a year after I stopped racing.  What was the NAMRA connection other than the name?  Were there other NAMRA sanctioned races?

Namra was setup for sanctioning group 7 races with a set of Rules etc. ran for a while in the east coast and faded away with the birth of NCC rules and championships.

In post #267 the B main picture? John Humm, in the late 70's he raced at Dexter's Hobby in K.C.K. I knew him as Lt John Humm as he was stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base east of K.C. Mo. Last I saw him he was restationed some where in Colorado. Wondered if anyone had any updated info on John.

When I started back racing again in 76 he had the records for the two class we ran, for the next year or so we had everyone running faster and had some good races, setting new records several times.

Hi Tony.

Wasn't Namra a super scale organization? If i remember it correctly you had to have, among other things, the correct wheelbase and track for the body you were using.

I kinda remember a race at Nutley where somebody found a real car that ran small diameter wheels and while the rest of the field ran big diameter, this racer cleaned up with his smaller wheels.

NAMRA was a scale organization but they started a Pro Division at the time Car Model Magazine stopped sponsoring races. It was an attempt to unify the rules as Namra had a pretty good name to start with.

Those were fun days. Wednesday night races would feature Emott, PVA, Big Jim Greenaway, Brady, Chris Vittuci, Gorski, Gunther Fass, Vic Caberra, and guest appearances by Ed Sohl, Howie, and Sandy. We'd get done around midnight get home at one and get up for high school at 7.

It was on the corner. That's it.

Looks like they changed the two doors by the track to an overhead door. It was at one time a car dealer.

Nutley1970.jpgTypical main at any of the NYC area tracks - or what was left in 1970. Could've been Buzzys or GlenOaks or C&C too. 'Monty", Eddie Hochdorf, Ed Sohl, TonyP, Brady, Mitch Keil, PvA...but I don't know the dood on red. I do remember Joel had those pants  And look how fashionable Ed looks! Those were great daze!
