It's that time of year again, the OVRR/R4 warm up race coming up January 30 at Tom Thumb Hobbies in Columbus, OH.
It will be a four class event starting with F1, Can-Am, GT Coupe, and JK Spec in that order. Note that the JK Spec and GT Coupe classes have been switched in the rotation so our out of town racers who want to race GT Coupe in the R4 will be able to get an earlier start home.
First, second, and third place plaques will be awarded for F1, Can-Am, and GT Coupe. A first place plaque and prizes donated by JK Products will be awarded for the JK Spec class.
Concours prizes donated by Outisight Bodies will also be awarded for F1, Can-Am, and GT Coupe.
The raceway will open at 8 AM, tech begins at 9:30 AM and racing will start at 10:30 AM. With the large turn-out expected we will be moving the program along as swiftly as possible so please try to have your cars legal for tech the first time through.
Entry fees will be $15 for your first race (includes a $5 pit pass) and $10 for each additional race that you enter.
Food and drinks will also be available.
So come on out and join the fun, get your cars set-up for the R4 and de-throne King Hershman.

For the first R4 my wife sugested the Hampton, I foolishly said "No the Econo Lodge is close and it will be fine since I'm traveling alone" Unless it has been impoved since 2008 you couldn't pay me to stay there? The engine braking from the trucks stop around 3:30 AM, but starts right up around 7:00 AM. Then there was the missing tile, don't want to know what the stain in the carpet was...........

Like taking candy away from a baby....... it only took us about a hour or so to stop and ask every hotel if they had it or not.

HOWEVER just today I was able to lock in a special rate at the Hawthorne Suites Hotel. It is definitely first class with kitchen, separate bedrooms (1 King or 2 Queens), free hot breakfast, pool, hot tub etc. R4 rate will be $85 per day double occupancy. Normal is $115 I think. The Hawthorne is on the other side I70...about 3 minutes from the Red Roof. PLEASE don't call them yet. It will not be active until sometime next week.
I am still trying to work with the other hotels in the area. Some of them must not need anymore biz as they aren't very open to special rates for events.
In the next few days I will be asking those of you who plan on attending the R4/3 your thoughts on a deal I have been working on. I have found and negotiated a do-able rate for a meeting / party room that we can go to after racing on Saturday night (from around 8:00pm to midnight) with food, soda, and "adult beverages" available for a reasonable $$. We will pick up the tab for the building - you would be responsible for the rest. Cindy and I thought it might be nice to go somewhere away from the shop and kick back, BS a little, bench race a lot, re-live old and new events, and generally do what can't be done during the race day schedule.
Think about it. Would you be interested in doing something like this? Any ideas on how to improve on the idea? I said the rate was do-able but that dosen't mean it's cheap. I don't want to drop a bunch of cash on an idea that few of you would participate in.
Give it some thought.

It's been almost or over 20 years since I raced at Tom Thumb's. I will see you Friday afternoon for a practice session and Saturday for the race. I have a room at the Holiday Inn Express.
See you all this weekend,
