I've had this kit unbuilt on the shelf for probably 20 years. It's an odd scale,1/16 but I love the subject matter. This is a time when men were men although you could say they substituted bravery for brainsPosted Image . Could you imagine doing 100 plus MPH in these things Posted Image. Don't forget your mechanic could fall out at any time. Anyway, the kit is quite simple but builds up into a neat model.

Beautiful but why yellow? The 1914 French GP winner driven by Christian Lautenschlager was painted in cream color and the tires were nearly white... :)

By the way I was very honored many years ago to be able to be a passenger for a few laps in one of the four works cars... what a thrill it was while I was pressurizing the tank 3 times per lap with a hand pump.

Can't please everyone I guessPosted Image . Just followed the box art. I was a very young lad in 1914 and my memory of colors sometimes fails me Posted Image .

Joe, it still looks great. I am sorry that the kit maker ( I think that Lindberg leased these molds from Entex in Japan) did not do it right in the first place by showing it in the wrong colors... at least they got the numbers colors right!
I found a pretty accurate history of what happened and where the cars ended HERE, it is a fascinating read.

:)

Here is the one that belongs to George Wingard, and is supposedly the very car. Note that it is no longer possible to get the light-colored tires, they don't make them anymore! :laugh2:

The numbers are black on this car, as they went from red to black after a team member was killed. Come to think of it, I like it more in the yellow color...

Great stuff Dokk. Another glaring error are the wooden spoke wheels in lieu of the correct wire type Posted Image . I am doing a Stutz from this series as well.

Joe, the gorgeous Stutz are almost the same color... white with red numbers! :)

This one is at the Petersen museum in Los Angeles, and is very original. An board-track car of course!

Lindberg has recently re-released these kits and they are currently available. Check out their website:

Man they where ahead of it, look at the size of those rims? :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: 22's or maybe even bigger then that?
I guess the guys in Chrysler 300 have to tuck some bigger wheels under the fender wells? :laugh2:
Cool car that makes Jail door cars look like Buck Rogers.

Hi

My project in waiting ia a 27 Delage GP. A guy in france sold me a lovely resin body of it, I have been in love with the look since the first time I saw a photo. And Al has said he is doing "the right wheels" soon, so I wait!

As a slot car.

I can't figure why would Lindberg or whoever did the original mold used "artillery" wheels and a yellow color for this model.

Posted Image

The only way I can think is that after some of the cars made it to the USA during WW1, one was modified by its new "owner" and one of the wheels broke, forcing a change to American-made wheels, and it possibly ran in these colors. I will have to check into this... :)

Dokk, the yellow car you show is the new issue from Lindberg. My kit is from 1977. The font on the new number decals is hideous. Looks nothing like a vintage style. And by the way, my Stutz is molded in red and it is going to stay redPosted Image . If you think I feel like painting red plastic white you are nuts Posted Image . I know it can be done but these builds are just for fun.

Man, Lindberg does not give you a break! Red it is then... :laugh2:
painting red plastic is indeed hopeless, even over gray primer... ;)

Okay, The Stutz is finally done. Even though simplistic in design I think they build into reasonable replicas. I like the Stutz better than the Mercedes I think. Decals were shot, but I will add some numbers from the stash soon. Thank the Lord for Gold foil. Anyway, here they are.

Nice job Joe! The yellow looks good, and I'm sure they raced somewhere with those wheels and livery...

An admittedly brief web search did reveal a photo of a yellow 1914 Mercedes GP (could be a privateer entry?) but with different rear bodywork and of course the probably more correct wire wheels...

One can also find photos of the 1914 Stutz in a red livery and a white number on the sides of the fuel? tank (with the same odd wheels!). The wheels seem to be a giveaway that the photos are of well-done models rather than actual cars.

It's not unusual for race cars of this era to have been run until they were junk and because of this, few original racers exist today.

Philippe, the Stutz wasn't just a board racer! These cars "stared" in the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exhibition's Vanderbilt races. Don't remember how they did.
