I recently found two of my dad's old Strombecker slot car kits. They are both in the original boxes, never put together.

One is a Porsche Carrera, #8638. The other is a Ford "J" Car, #9525.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about them and if they are worth anything?

Hi Kristen,

Strombecker used two types of chassis and motors for the cars sold in these boxes. Please take pictures of the chassis and I will be able to give you a pretty good idea.

Regardless and because they are Strombecker and quite common models, do not expect miracles...

Hi,

And thus, you have both versions! The first car can be done as a good runner, though if memory serves, the motor should be the milder TC32 version of this.

The second came in several versions, one of which was all metal. This design is after the "good" period and were availabe off the shelf in small shops everywhere unsold. There are also several motor variants on the second car. Not a valued collectible.

So neither one is valuable?

Hi Kristen,

The one with the brass chassis and the chrome-plated motor with the red endbell is a factory RTR issued in 1967, and is worth right around $100. The original issues were sold in very pretty and more valuable kits in 1966. By 1967, most lost their patience and wanted cars ready to race like right now, explaining the change to RTR models in the line. Yep, there were almost no more kits in the line!

The second one with the aluminum and plastic chassis is a 1968 issue and is less desirable, worth around $65.

These are realistic values, but could go higher in an eBay auction if two bidders could not live without them.

Regards,

P
