Ron, great pictures! I have most of them but in smaller format. This is the 1967 Arco race in Atlanta.

Posted Image

Picture # 2: it is Champion's owner and president, Jim Williams.
Picture # 3: third from the left is Bob Cozine, fifth is Bryan Warmack. Next to him is Sandy I believe.
Picture # 4: Emott, third is Jack Lane, then Cozine...
Picture # 6: OK Ron, look how nice the cars look... :)
Picture # 9: Jim Williams is the one shaking Howie's hand.
Picture # 11: Cozine and Cukras look at ???'s car. Phil Rubin is next to Cukras.
Picture # 13: Cukras F1 Honda that won the race and is possibly the only survivor today from that race:

The graphic of the "707" was airbrushed by Ray Gardner. He was Champion's art director and is responsible for most of the ads, drawings etc.

What size are these pictures?

Yes, I took look at those cars... I noticed many one color paint jobs... the #6 in the middle row must be Warmack's... that interior looks a bit "stealth" and no injector/stack detail either. ;)

They are normal size snapshots... sorry I scanned them and have no idea how to adjust the size.

No problem, same size as mine I guess.

By the way, on this shot, Howie, Pete and Bob K are admiring the car with which ray "Speedy" Gonzales won the Stock Car Concours. smile.gif

Track owner Tom Thornton is grinding tires in the first shot and the #21 American Rubber Lola T70 belongs to Bob Van Streeter. Slotblog member Raymond Gonzales was there too and won the Stock Car concours :good: (I think that's Raymond's car that Pete is holding)

The DC-65X Diaries have a page on this race: Bob Cozine's 1967 Arco Champion car or...

Nesta interviewed Howie about this race: Howie Ursaner interview :)

Hey Ron,

Nice find in the vault. These look to be the best pics I have seen from The Day. All of the others are from magazines and these are the only real photos I have seen.

Man, we look good there, LOL.

Dokk,

I beg to differ but that is my concours winner that PVA is admiring.

Ray,

Corrected, and in fact the story says so in the mag.

The car looks pretty good, too. Did you keep has or is it gone to Slot Car Heaven after a cruel life or Nestanization? :)

Speedy still has the body, but I dunno if he still has the chassis. He brought the body to at least one SERRA™ race.

Ron,

Thanks for sharing.

Can you believe that box of cars :shok::shok:. I think Thigpen should do them all including the wooden box :laugh2:. I am sure he is capable.

Question for the wise Dokktor. On the bottom of the Cukras car the motor has a -26 after the motor number. I have not seen this before.Original motor in pic has only three digits. Please explain the -26.

Quite simple: the original motor was long gone when I restored the car for John. In fact the whole thing was just a corroded chassis and a body in 2 pieces plus the driver. So the chassis was cleaned, some joints that were broken, re-soldered, new correct wheels and tires found and fitted, a correct Champion can was fitted with the correct Mabuchi FT16D endbell (if you noticed, the motor used a Mabuchi endbell, not the Champion, why? Because the diameter of the Champion endbell bearing housing does not clear the Russkit motor bracket, so obviously some acrobatics were necessary!), a genuine early Zimmerman arm was fitted because it is likely what would have been in the motor, and the original body pieces were carefully re-attached and some decals repaired. LOTS of work on this one!
I simply did not have a correct Champion sticker for the motor available. This can be changed in time. :)

Oh, and yes, the "26" stands for the wire size. :D

In that one shot you can tell Chris Vitucci is from NY with his Italian knit... Same picture also has Wayne Williams. It may be from the Grells Arco race.

I think the picture with Phil Rubin was the Columbus Arco.

I think The picture with Phil Rubin was the Columbus Arco.

Photo 11 with Cukras in the middle in the plaid shirt and playing "pocket pool" was from the Columbus Arco race. Well, according to Ray Gardner's book.

Purple Mile and anglewinders... Phil Killian won the race.

I think he had the only motor that did not blow up. Back then the big races were on some of the shittiest tracks... launch ramps, power that cooked motors in ten minutes etc....

I was there...
