We arrived at Gaithersburg about 8 am. Practice had just started, The TRACK looked as usual, smooth, clean, and glued perfectly. Roman K. had the surface just perfect. I had a feeling track records would fall today, and fall they did.

After practice was completed at 10 am, 8 signed in for the GT Coupe Amateur event. With lane assignments now completed, we were ready to go with the first race of the day.

Ron Pearson and Larry Mattingly got out front early and paced the field in the first segment. Rick Bennardo, Tony Moore, and Robert Rodgers followed closely. At the end of the first segment , Ron Pearson and Larry Mattingly had completed 40 laps. They were on pace to not only set an Amateur record, but crush the GT C Pro record as well. By the third segment , it was Pearson, Mattingly, and Bennardo setting a blistering pace. Rick's great run ended in the fourth segment as he caught up in trouble and broke a pan on his chassis. Last years winner was done for the event. With 2 segments to go, Pearson had a 3 lap advantage over Mattingly, with Robert Rodgers running third 5 laps back. At the finish, It was Ron Pearson over Larry Mattingly with Robert Rodgers in third. Tony Moore had a good run finishing 4th followed by Gary Culy in fifth. Bill Dougherty, Tom Smith and Rick Bennardo rounded out the field. Ron completed the event with 314 laps, setting a new track record for the GTC Amateur event. The lap total also bested last years GTC Pro record as well.

Rons car was a SKUNKWORKS chassis, TSR motor, geared 9-28, equipped with JK Wonders on the rear.
