F1 Build

Today I picked up the pans and shaker piece from my buddy Bill Worden who machined them for me. .015 was taken off the side of the pans for a total width of .235 and the shaker is .720 wide. Should provide aproximately .030 side to side movement when finished? The back of the pans had the thickness of the Backagra machined off. This was so the Backagra could double as the pan downstop.
Now I can continue.

Is that front axle support brass? It looks like steel in the top photo, but in the bottom view the rail appears to be brass. Either way, a nice job of bending .
0.030" seems like a LOT of movement. I built mine with 0.015", and they both work well.

If that support is brass, I assume he'll add a few more in piano wire.

Yeah, looking at it closer, it looks like the outer 2 rails are the brass ones.
If that support is brass, I assume he'll add a few more in piano wire.
Yes, I will

I dunno? At the Sano Howie had one with about .015 movement and tried mine and prefered it to his. Used it for a 2nd place finish for the flat track F1 race.
Actually with the rails walking a little from soldering two different materials together the actual gap lands up in the .020 - .025 range

I misspoke. I checked my notes, and my chassis' have 0.020" side-to-side movement, 0.015" vertical movement.
And besides, that's what I like about building. If it doesn't work, you can tear it apart and start over again, instead of having to buy a new flavor-of-the-week chassis.

And Mike;'s right, this sort of frame seems to work better with more movement. I have been making them a bit tighter lately and they don't work as well as the earlier ones that had more movement. I guess it affects the way the rails flex.
