With the GTC Am race completed, it was time for the F1s to take to the King. Practice proved that the track record of 4.25 would fall, and fall it did, as four drivers bested the track record. Dale Granger and his SkunkWorks F1 went 4.1215 for a new track record. Congrats to Dale on his T/Q pole run. The M-D Retro Series again has set some of the fastest Retro times recorded for F1 cars at the super fast Gaithersburg King.

M-D F1 Retro Qualifying:

1. Dale Granger.....................4.1215 (NEW TRACK RECORD)
2. Randy Kohr.......................4.1715
3. Robert Rodgers.................4.1917
4. Bill Gerhart........................4.2236

6. Gary Culy..........................4.4438
7. Bob Young.........................4.4847
8. Tom Smith.........................4.7961

We decided on running a nine man round robin. After lane selection, we were ready to go.

Robert Rodgers broke away early and led the first two segments, Dale and Bill G. trailed by one lap. By heat 4, Bill G. had taken over with his new SkunkWorks F1. Robert Rodgers and Gary Culy had car trouble in heat 4 which dropped them from contention. Randy Kohr now moved into second by heat 6. At the start of the last heat Bill maintained a 4 lap lead over Randy and Dale. He cruised to his first F1 victory with M-D Retro. Randy Kohr finished second with Dale Granger on the podium in third. Bob Young ran strong for fourth with Tom Adams fifth. Brian Koberlein, Robert Rodgers, Gary Culy and Tom Smith rounded out the field. Bill's car was a SkunkWorks, geared 8/29, equipped with JK treated rears.

The entire Can-Am field was separated by .37 seconds, closest field in M-D Retro history!

We split the event into two mains. Six would go to the A, Five to the B. Total laps would determine the finish.

Ron Pearson, Bob Young, and Bobby Davis Jr. had a fierce battle in the B Main. Ron won with Bob second both completed 321 laps. Bobby Jr. had 320. Does not get much closer than that!

The A Main was a super fast pace. Randy, Bobby III, and Bill got out front early. Dale Granger had trouble in heat 1 and lost four laps. By heat 3 Randy and Bill had pulled away and were setting a blistering pace. Then Billy G spun a pinion, or so he thought. It proved to be a loose left rear wheel. Poor car preparation was the cause! If you blink at Gaithersburg, you lose 20 laps. After repairs Bill got going but 20 laps down to the leader. Randy now had a commanding lead as the big battle was for second between Dale and Bobby III. At the finish it was Randy Kohr with his first Can-Am win of the year at Gaithersburg. Dale nipped Bobby for second. Ron Pearson finished fourth with that awesome run in the B. Bob Young was fifth and Bobby Davis Jr. sixth. Bill Gerhart, Roman Kormulek, Robert Rodgers, Gary Culy, and Brian Koberlein rounded out the field. Randy's SkunkWorks chassis was geared 8/29, equipped with Thunder rubber rears. Congrats to Randy, Dale, and Bobby III on their podium finishes.

During our traditional stop for dinner at BUGABOO CREEK STEAK HOUSE in Gaithersburg, Md., I was reminded that I did not take pictures of our F1 and Can Am T/Q pole winners. So, out came the camera to make our pole winners happy ! Then the F1 and Can Am winners then had their picture taken out front with the Bugaboo Creek Moose !

Qualifying is always intense, but even more so at Gaithersburg, where you really have to hussle the car. Check out Roman K. and Ron P. qualifying their Can Am cars. I think Roman is smiling because I asked him if he needs a taller gear :laugh2: .

Great job Robert and Bobby!!!

Thanks Richie!

I tried a old car that Bob R. and i designed and built. It was the first race I ever used it. I'm pleased how I finished but there were so many things I didn't do to make this car extremely fast. Next time there I will be in the 3.8 or 3.7's qualifying. Thats racing though, you learn each time.

Great race at Chicks!!!!! I wanted to be there so bad! I had cars ready but they forced us to work saturday from 1-4 so chicks was impossible. Nice wins!

Great racing with you guys and always a pleasure to host the Mason Dixon Retro group.

Just a week prior to this event I was on that same King track running sub 2 second laps in a Mid-Atlantic wing race and I gotta tell ya, when it's all said and done, it's all the same, racing sub 2 second or racing 4.2's, wings and no wings, it's all racing, it's all an adrenaline rush, and it's all good.

Keep up the good work guys and we'll do all we can to help grow attendance in the future.
