Hello Everyone,

Check this out! A racer came into the shop toting these along to show me, and I had to get pictures and permission from him to show these here at Slotblog.

I think they're a work of art!

He told me that a die was made to make the bodies, the brass one was formed in the die using a press. While the carbon fiber one was done using the same die with layers of the carbon mat laid into the die and pressed to let harden. To me what is so cool is the body NOW becomes part of the chassis.

Personally, I've never seen them run, but from what he told me was they actually flex upward in the center just like their 1:1 counterparts.

Enough of my bragging andranting; here are the pictures.

Super cool, Brian! I like the CF one just because of the way that stuff looks so... high-tech. :)

I would have liked it even better if the builder cut out the driver's area and did even a minimal interior, but they're both still really nice!

Hello fellow Fuelers!

Those fuel rails look like they will bend and twist like the real thing! Back in the '70s my slot drag racing buddies and I were trying to get away from using so much steel in our cars. We started experimenting with monocoque structures like the real racers were. We used styrene model kits and screwed the motors directly to the styrene. We discovered, as they did, that the structure was very stiff. For real rails it was bad because everything else on the car would break. For us it was good because we now had a slot car that could plant the tires and hold them on the ground instead of bouncing around.

The Air Force rail in the attached pictures was pretty much unbeatable on a plastic track or a professional epoxy paint or vinyl track. Since the '70s track power advanced too much for this car but it held sway for a while. It is still a champ and still running but not competitive with the current laser cut spring steel chassis designs.

I have an article on this car if anyone cares to read it.

Pete, can you post the article on the Air Force rail?
