The first annual "Retro Summit" race was held July 23-24, 2011 at TR Motorplex in Miamisburg, Ohio on their 155' Gerding King track. While it was very hot outside with temps in the 105 degrees with "heat index" it was a tad warm upstairs racing but bearable by all who attended. The Retro Summit was a joint effort/venture of the MRRA, ORS and Penn-Ohio racing series.

Friday practice started off with the track a bit sticky in anticipation of the high heat through the weekend and while several complained, the track surface was perfect for some very close racing on Saturday and Sunday.

First up on Saturday was F-1 qualifying......Ron Hershman put it on the pole and seat a new qualifying track record with a time of 4.154.

Then it was time for Can-Am qualifying.... no new track record but Ron Hershman was once again T.Q. with a time of 4.195

The F-1 C Main....... it was actually a "B" main, but we had plaques to give away to the winners of the mains so the B became the C and the A became the B with the over all finish being the "A" main. NO move-ups.

Attached File  DSCN0198.JPG   83.9K   0 downloads

The B main started off with Brian Cox and the Boogie Man tied for first with 37 laps a piece. In heat 2 Brian drove off into the sunset running consistent fast laps and high totals. Brian continued to lead until the4th heat when his motor disconnected from his chassis sending him to the pits for repairs. At this point Mike Reniger took the lead and held on to win over "comeback" Brian Cox. Mike had 300 laps, Brian had 296 and was followed by Boogie Man 292, Greg Van Peenen 289, Steve Deiters 283, Eric Balicki 282 ,Rich Attee who spent a entire heat in the pits after a vicious wall shot in the bank with 243 laps and Jacob Shiplet DNF 16 laps.

In Heat 3 Ron caught back up with both having 123. After 4 Ron led by 1 lap. Next up was the 2 hour Coupe Enduro. Can-Am rules were used with the exception of having to run a Coupe/GTC body. We condensed it to 8 10 minute mains and had four teams. Two teams from MRRA and two teams from ORS. No track calls and pitting under the green only.

This may have been the closest race of the weekend considering the length of the race.

After the first 10 minute heat it was Team RPM leading by ONE lap over Teams Goober and Malachi Brothers. Team Boogie was 4 laps behind. In heat two Malachi Bros 260, RPM 257, Goober 252 and Boogie 251. After 3 RPM 387, Malachi 385, Goober 384 and Boogie 377.

After 4 heats it was the closest of the race after 40 minutes of racing. RPM 516, Goober 515, Malachi 514, Boogie 501. In heat 5 Goober pulled out by 4 laps and never looked back to win with 1030 laps. In second and coming back in the 7th heat to finish 2nd was Malachi Brothers 1020, RPM 3rd 1014 and Boogie 1011.

Looks like Jeremy had an unfair advantage running a 1/20 scale anglewinder?

In all seriousness, looked like a good time

Ron covered all of the thank you's But i would like to thank ron for all the work that he put into this race It was a great time and everyone from MI had a blast ! This race is a great idea and will grow as the years go on due to the time of year as our original date could not work out and some other reasons the turn out was a little light from what we were expecting but this race will grow . The raceing was close and fast in every class makeing everything exciting till the very end. I will do everything i can to help promote this race for next year because its great for retro raceing to get 3 different series toghter at one event.

I would to say thanks to all the racers that came and brought their A game to make it a great weekend. And to The shadow " Almost"

Team Goober's car was a Maynard built Slick 7 chassis with an O/S Chevron Body, P-S "bag motor". Jacob ran that chassis in the Can-Am race. All we did to the car was change the body and one front tire ( it was in bad shape) and install a new motor. I think Rick geared the car at 7:28.

It may have been hot inside, but the racing was just as hot. That was a fun time for all that were there. The Enduro was insanely close through 5 heats. Some strategy involved as well. Thankfully taking a guess with a motor that had just been broken in on weds paid off(thanks Eric). Lots of laughs to be had over the weekend, those that missed, missed a good time.

Thanks to Ron for putting on a great race.

Many thanks to Rick and his wife for hosting the event that was taking place at the same time as they were having a special drag racing event downstairs on the strip with 195(!)cars signed up to run not to mention the car show that the town was putting on on the main street just outside the track! It was almost car guy overload on Saturday.

Many thanks to Ron H. for getting all of this race together from concept to execution and it was done seamlessly. Lots and lots of work and planning behind the scenes that takes place unseen by the participants for the most part to make an event like this happen and it did in a great way. Special thanks to Rande Marshall and Terry Watson who came down early with Ron to clean and spray the track which came in great and was perfect the whole weekend. It's a nasty job, but somebody had to do it and they did it well.

Special thanks to all the racers from Michigan who made the trek down I-75 for the events with boxes full of awesome horsepower especially for the retro anglewinder event on Sunday. Hope it was a good weekend of racing for them and they come down more often in the coming fall and winter ORS season.

All in all it was a great weekend of racing jam packed with activity from start to finish. Should be a "need to go to" event for next year for everyone in driving distance and then some of T/R.

Congratulations to everyone who made the show...

I was really disappointed that Dan Myers and I were a last minute scratch, as Dan couldn't get off work on Friday evening. Rob Garner was another scratch, as the Canadian guys could't make it due to Rob's father being ill. Steve Koepp was on vacation, ditto with Steve and Aaron P.

Mid-summer races are difficult to pull off, what with vacations, outdoor activities and the general malaise of this time of year...

We looked at a number of different dates, and for 2011, July was the only month that 'worked'.

Original thinking was that a season ending, or regular season kick off race would be a better fit. Just couldn't get the stars to align this year.

Concept is good (three series working together),got the first one under our belts, and everyone had FUN...
