East Tenn Model Raceway in association with Smoky Mtn Retro Association is proud to present:

Smoky Mtn Southern Shootout

... an IRRA™ Premier Event!

Posted Image

April 27-29, 2012

Finally we have a premier Retro event in the south!

Thursday - Open practice 3 PM to 10 PM
Friday - Track opens at 7 AM, Race order = Stock Car, GTC-FK (hand out TSR), GTC-PD
Saturday - Track opens at 7 AM, Race order = Can-Am
Sunday - Track opens at 7 AM, Race order = F1

Thursday practice - $5, Pit Passes for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - $10 per day, or Combination Pit Pass for all four days - $25.

Race entry fees - $15 per event, $20 for hand-out motor events.

World-famous "Tech Nazi" Joe "Noose" Neumeister will be the tech director!

We currently are working to expand the store, and if that deal goes through, we are going purchase the G1 King that is in New Jersey if it's still available at that time. If expansion deal doesn't happen, all races will be run on the 148' reverse Kingleman. The track is in great shape, and has just been professionally rebraided! We have had many Retro events on the track, including SMRA and SERRA, and the races all turned out great!

Raceway is located just 2.4 miles off Interstate 81 and just a few miles away from the I-81 and I-26 intersection! This way racers from all directions have easy access! Raceway is located just a few miles from an airport that has daily flights to Chicago!

There are several hotels and many restaurants within four miles of raceway. We will post a list of area hotels for all racers to have easy access to.

Being centrally located between the north & south and having approx 15-18 Can-Am racers locally, we expect to have a big number of entries, especially in Can-Am!
Top racers such as Ralph Thorne, Jay Guard, Greg Wells, James Merriman, and Chris Barnes have raced on our Kingleman! They will be tough to beat! It's going to be a blast watching other top racers from around the country go up against these regional favorites!

TBA classes will be announced shortly!

For more info visit East Tenn Model Raceway or call (423) 647-9271.

Man, what GREAT news! I can't wait until April. Roger, count me in. You have to be the BEST promoter for slot car racing in the US. If I can do anything for you, let me know.

Looks like the Holtsclaw/Crutchfield rivalry will go on national news, LOL.

Will do. Everybody remember Bill today. He is having some minor surgery and hope to have him back racing in time for Snellville.

Word from Crutch at Central TN is that we'll have Gil Gunderson of Team Boola at the Shootout! Gil has became a big fan of Retro racing!

Also will have Wally Fleming, another well-known racer has also started Retro as well!

I am working on deals with hotels to get racers a special price. I will compose a list of hotels for everyone after I see what I can nail down.

I can announce the first award that will be given.

There will be an award for "Top Gun at the Shootout" winner be based on a points system with points awarded in all events and of course most points will determine the "Top Gun"!

I am determined to make this a very valuble award. I will be working hard to get as many prizes as possible and really make it worth your while to compete in every event.

I can tell you at this point, there will be a traditional trophy at the Shootout. Similar to Nashville with the guitar, and Martinsville with the grandfather clock. Each year at the Shootout the Top Gun will receive a custom hand-painted Can-Am body by Noose! The body show that you are the Top Gun of the Shootout! Of course it will be highly detailed and one of a kind! It will have the date, and the car number will represent the Shootout chronologically. So the number at this race will #1. It will be as awesome like everything Noose paints!

There will be many more prizes to follow for the Top Gun award, keep watching!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but the minor surgery for Bill Bowers was called off in favor of cardiac bypass surgery yesterday. I went to see him this morning and the surgery went well. Might be a few weeks before he can get back to racing.

You don't worry about hijacking anything, Bobby. Bill is important to us. Please keep us updated on how he is doing, and please do it right here in this thread.

Get well soon, Bill!

Went to visit Bill last night and he is doing much better. They pulled his chest tube out and he has been up walking a little. He may get to come home Saturday. Bill said to thank everyone here on Slotblog for thinking of him.

Just wanted to add to this thread that since Ed Tunkel rebraided the East Tennessee Kingleman, it is among the best tracks I've ever raced on condition-wise. Before Tunkel worked his magic, the braid height varied quite a bit; now it is as consistent as I've ever seen anywhere.

The track doesn't have a single quirk right now as far as I can tell... no uneven joints, no places where cars tend to launch, etc.

Another reason to put the Smoky Mtn Retro Shootout on your calendar now!

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

We had one of those up here at a place called Slot Zone in Nanuet, NY. The track was purple with a gray surface. We had a race planned there but the owner priced us out of racing there. It was a great track and we had lots of practice time on it.

Now that the R4/5 is history, time to turn our eyes toward the upcoming Shootout.

Anything new to report, Roger?

Finalizing the the daily schedule now. We are going to utilize the practice rotation format that Mike used at the R4. It worked very well. Noose and I are in conversation about formats now.
A few things I can update you on are:
JK Cup, Stock car, & GTC will be seeded into mains and lap totals will determine final results. F1 and Can-Am will use the Retro East format. I will let Noose explain that one to ensure accuracy.
A small church next door will be serving dinner Friday night, breakfast, lunch and dinner Saturday. There will be an area downstairs from the track to eat if you choose. Of course you may eat upstairs where the track is if you like. Sunday we are having pizza delivered. There may be more to come on this.
The infamous Tony P has said he is coming, so that will be great!
More updates to come!
