I have already made one copy of this car Penske 512M for my partner and old friend, Jan Juul, but as the race in Neumünster draws closer (August 27) I have to speed up the building of the race car as well as another Ferrari for Jan's son, Christoffer, who also drives in the race.

The 5l Rennen in Neumünster, Germany is well-known by 1/24 Scale Racing fans in Europe and this is the third time Jan and I will be participating.
In 2009 we drove the 1971 LeMans-winning Martini Porsche 917 917K martini and last year the famous 1970 Hippie Porsche 917 Langheck 917LH Hippie.

In order to try something different we chose the 1971 Penske Ferrari 512M Daytona entry driven by Donohue/Hobbs. This is a great race car which both looked stunningly good in its heyday, but also was one of the fastest Ferrari 512Ms around.

In the 5l Rennen, your concours points (max 20) are added to your race result, meaning that a nice, detailed car could bring you 1-2 places up the latter. "Unfortunately" the Germans are masters in discipline and there are many 20 point cars in the race. The concours rules are biased around certain details and high-gloss finishes, which means that you can get max points for a car that is not 100% correct, but has the features that are favoured in the rules. As an example, the real Porsche racing cars of the '60s did not have a high-gloss paint finish, but were known for their rough (but low weight) appearance. But under the German rules you can't get max points if you enter a 100% scale model of these Porsches - you have to apply a thick layer of gloss layer of varnish to get max points. :-(

But enough of this - such are the rules and you have to live with them.

This body is based on the same as my previous build - a lightweight GRP body with lightweight interior and light kit (half of the race is driven in darkness). I have done some of the details myself; others are from various kits.

n2a.jpg
Body ready for clear coat - Decals are from Fisher. Aluminum tape is used for detailing.

n3a.jpg
Engine copy/light boom made from cast resin part, plastic tubes, and piano wire. A lightweight light kit is built in - giving rear lights with strong braking lights as well as flashing exhaust pipes. :-) The light kit is from Belgian Z-machine.

n4a.jpg
Most of these parts are home made in vacform: driver with resin arms, vacform battery, etc. Seat belts are painted painters tape with PE parts. Decals are homemade.

Low weight is an issue - weight above the chassis doesn't help you much. :-)

n5a.jpg
Clear resin copies of the original Fisher lights - ready for drilling and installing the micro SMD LED diodes.

n6a.jpg
Looks great :-) - worth the time spent, I think. :-)

n7a.jpg
Lights in the instruments as well. The panel is vacformed from the Heller Ferrari 512S kit's instrument panel and after drilling the holes, instrument decals were added and small SMD diodes were added to provide light.

n8a.jpg
Side windows and engine intakes were added. Windows were vacformed from Fisher originals and cut out and scribed to simulate the opening windows of the original.

n9a.jpg
Intake cover in place - next step is mounting the light kit and connecting it to the diodes of the number light and instrument panel.

Finished the work with the light installation - I used the Z-mchine 161 kit as a basis and added the four number/ID lights as well as two LEDs behind the instruments in the cockpit

Very, very cool. LOTS of detail. You are a patient man.

Very nice work, Niels!

I have put lights in my static models for years but never yet tried a slot car. Love it!

Thanks for the kind words - work is progressing. :-)

But only a few days left and I have one more car to do - not that detailed however.

n1a.jpg
Wing made from folded 0.2mm plasticard added with thin flexible rubber mounts.

n2a.jpg
Front light covers and details added. Screw head are PE phillips heads in true scale. :-)

n3a.jpg
More details added.

Paint job looks like crap on these close-up photos. :-(

PS: Kirk F. White, who sponsored the real car 40 years ago, has approved the car, so I'm proud to race this legendary car in the 40th jubilee year. :)

Greg (Cheater) was so kind to inform me that Kirk F. White - the sponsor of the Daytona car is still alive and active selling all kind "remarkable treasures" (his own words) from old tether cars to very fine 1:1 cars

www.kirkfwhite.com

I took the chance and wrote to him about my project, also including some photos of the model. He was kind enough to answer back immediately - I'm sure he won't mind me quoting him:

Dear Niels:

What an amazing accomplishment. The car looks absolutely spot on! The 512 was a very special car for all of us. It still has many fans after forty years and I'm pleased you're going to be racing it. Please let me know how you do with the race.

Your other models are equally amazing, and your track is fantastic.

All the best,

Kirk White

What a nice guy. :-) This year is the 40th Anniversary of this great car and I am honored to drive this small scale replica in Germany in one week's time. :-)

At last! - and in the last moment - the car is ready and (crash) tested and we are off to Germany tomorrow, Friday. Last details are added and the car looks great :-) - I tested it on a dark track today and the blue and orange ID/numbers lights looked alright - as did the flashing exhaust lights. :-)

n1a.jpg
PE windshield wiper looks realistic.

n2a.jpg
Rear lights cast in clear resin with SMD diodes behind giving realistic lights and brakes light. Small yellow SMD diodes in mounted in the upper exhaust pipes and flashed briefly when brakes are applied. These are standard Z-Machine features. I modified the kit with extra super small SMD diodes built into the ID lights on the roof and the blue numbers light on the sides. The light were cast in clear resin and drilled out to accept the 0.5 x 0.5 x 1.0mm diodes.

Intakes are visible through the vacformed intake cover.

Fine PE details added.
