I've had good success using graphite powder, that locksmiths use to lubricate lock tumblers.
You should be able to get some from your local locksmith.

Did you treat those gears to a ride in your tumbler? That would probably help your noise problem, and it's not as messy as toothpaste.

What color are you going to paint it? IIRC, mine was a medium-dark green with a chrome tape stripe (offset), and three circular number stickers.

Absolutely and make sure that it contains fluoride, so that the teeth get no cavities.

Thanks John, I'm good for now. I'll post some photos of the F1 build I'm doing tomorrow. After a race I'm doing in October I'm going to do a 13D powered Sheraton Thomson Indy Car. I might need some then.


Maybe I'll come up tomorrow and try running the R-Geo prototype at Wanker Valley?

Hi Pablo,

I really like your body mount solution. Hind sight is 20-20 and that's the way I'd have done it....if I had thought of it!

As for your rough gear mesh, I've noticed that not all 48P gears are "created equal" and mesh smoothly, especially if both gears are metal. I'm lucky enough to have a variety of different pinions which helps in finding a combination that's "happy" with each other.

A Cox Nylatron spur gear would probably be an instant fix. Would you like me to see if I have one for the project?

Thanks Rick, that well may be the problem - gears are similar but not mated perfect. I can't find any reason why the mesh should not be smooth - feels smooth when turned by hand, but when revs increase on power supply, it sounds nasty.

I think you are also right, a nylatron would be the ticket. Since my motor mount method is kind of permanent, it would have to mike about .987 ...... I would appreciate it !!!!!

OK Pablo, here's what I've got. The Cox set screw hub spur gears measure about .275" wide. The 48T measures 1.045" in diameter. The 46T measures 1.008". A 45T might be just the ticket for your .987" number...but you'd have to get one from EJ's. He has them listed in his latest catalog.

If you could measure the distance over your armature shaft and axle I could use the measurement to mock something up. Then I might be able to find a combination of pinion and spur that would work.

If you had a bit of armature shaft sticking out past the pinion this would be pretty simple...but it looks like you don't .

OK here is the deal,
#1, thanks dc-65x for teaching me that not all gears advertised as "48 Pitch" will mesh well together. That was a learning experience for me.
#2, I think either a 46T or a 45T Cox nylon spur gear will mate better with my 16T 48P mystery pinion. Thanks everybody for understanding it would be painful to move the motor.
Hindsight is 20/20 and had I known a set of 48 pitch gears would not cooperate, I would not have secured the motor until I got a good mesh. My next build, I will be wiser....
#3, Rick, my best guess is, a 45T Cox is going to fit perfect. You said EJ'S Hobbies had them , BUT, they have a $40 minimum order. I found a Slotblog buddy who has both a 45 and a 46 who offered to send me both of them.

Sure enough, dc-65x hit the nail on the head.....with a Cox spur, the drivetrain is smooth and really wails on the power supply !!!

Track test #1 completed.
As I thought, the car runs very well overall. Handling is surprizingly good, it tracks and slides well, no bad de-slotting habits. Negotiates the sharp curves at Greg Gilbert's tight Gerding very nice !
Speed and power delivery is excellent, it really scoots nice ! Very good acceleration and straightaway speed.
Drop arm/flag/front wheel relationship was perfect; fronts lightly touch and roll.
One problem: the car "hops" or "shudders" a little under acceleration.
So, I need to disassemble the drivetrain and trouble shoot that.

Paint coming soon; I have Model Master Acylics Deep Pearlescent Purple # 4651, and Grape Pearl, 4650.

We had the "Cruisin' the Coast" vintage car shows this weekend down here; lots of nice cars from the 30's to the 80's driving around. One thing I noticed is, alot of very nice cars were RUINED, in my opinion, by bad shades of paint. I saw a 30's hot rod painted baby blue, but it was FLAT looking, and the wrong shade. The baby blue that Merriman puts on his retro cars would have looked great on this car, but this thing looked like baby-puke blue.
On the other hand, I saw a 40's coupe that had very deep metallic purple, that is what I (we ) want on this car.
Must do a test body first to make sure it's right. With acrylics, one never really knows how the paint will look until it's backed up with white or silver.

Just a guess, but I think the tires are providing too much traction. Let them dry out a week or two and give it another test if possible.
