Well, after a little searching, I finally found my old friend and former racer, Mike Kondor.

Found out from our own Oscar M. that Kondor works (actually owns) a tool shop in the area, so I gave him a call.

Same old Mike. Sounds interested in coming to BPR for the Checkpoint. Still knows a thing or two about slot cars, remembers all the names, so lets see if we can't lure another one back.

This slot racing world gets more interesting and fun all the time!

Great job Tom. I am sure a few months back I ask about him in slot car history. Be careful he put Thorp on the Map and Treated me just like Terry Smidt does to this day.and he can Drive with the best!

Hey Fiedler! I remember Mike from way back, though more in name than else. The memories come with others from the early '70s. A few other names were Neil McCurdy and Jim Greenimeyer for example. Gus in Sacto

FIDDLER! Not Fielder. Just kidding, don't care what I'm called, just don't call me late for dinner. I do not recall the other names, but me and Mike go waaaay back, like best man at my wedding! And other, uhh, harmless trouble before. You get the idea.
The guy was a rocket; ran with the best of 'em for a while. Lets hope he makes a comeback.

Next you will be bringing back Bill Ussery and Bob Green, and maybe Matt Azara will still have his old Harvey Aluminum Special somewhere in his box !

Yeah, we're going to try and hook up over the holidays, if at least on the phone. But, there are two of us that have mentioned the Checkpoint to Mike, so he might just come by to see how things are going, kind of like I did. So, lets see what happens.

Wow! John, thanks for the pic of Mike! Hopefully, you two can meet again at the Checkpoint. Are you going to make it out West?
And you're correct, he was pretty damn good back in the day! Hope to see you in Jan. John. Take care.

Matt Azzara was at the Boola Bash this past weekend. He brought with him a 1972 annual newsletter by Al Chuck.
Here's the front cover of the "Grundy Gazette"
SCAN0084_l.jpg
Some of the racers in the photo, Bob Green (3rd from left), Forrest Watchers (4th from left), Al Chuck (7th from left).
The Grundy Gazette covered mainly northern Cal (Bay area) racing, but included many of the USRA races in 1972.
This copy belongs to Matt Azzara. I'll bring it tomorrow (D3 races at BPR) if anyone wants to take a look at it.

Say hi to Mike for me! And say hi for Lee Gilbert too, he's sitting here getting ready to race some LMP (?) class car. I'll see y'all at the Cup next month.

Another grand reunion a brewing!

Mike Kondor. One of the most naturally fast guys I ever saw race. I think he brought home the bacon at the infamous Berwyn NCC race at Ben Krume's place using a Thorpe 26/27 arm in the spring of 1970.

Love that Western States posting from Keith T. It was like a who's who of west coat racing in the early, early '70's.

The cartoon...the broom has "Ohio or Bust" on it. Was that a reference to the upcoming Coca Cola Race in Springfield, Ohio of the era?

New Kondor alert!
Mike gave me a call today and would like to race at the Checkpoint. Buuuut, he needs a car. And he told me he wants a Lee Gilbert anglewinder for the Retro-Pro race! Geez; typical Kondor! I'm pretty sure he is just messing with me, but, he is interested in the race; probably to see some old faces and get some ideas. Slots would be cool to get MK back in. This is good.

Won't happen anytime soon :D . Lee is into the flat track racing world and has said (after looking at retro cars and rules) "No money in it for me". Lee typically doesn't build chassis anymore from scratch, he does assemble and tune cars then maintains them for his customer base. Not quite like he did back in the day, but similar. He does have tyres and other items under his "Speed Shop" label.

Not to tweak anyone's beak but just what was/is wrong with Bill Ussery & Bob Green, both were good guys and I was proud to have been friends with back when. There are plenty of guys still racing that could not make HP like those guys. Bill Ussery wound arms after moving to AZ that absolutely kicked butts, he squared off against Steube's, Mura's etc with single 29 or 27's at Henry's Hobbies where the long straights favored the big wire & names and left them in the dust.
