Can someone explain the tire hub description from the following:

Big full hub?
Big hub?
Full hub?

Tire is a .720" and .750", 3/32" axle, running on an Engleman. Cheetah 21 chasis, GTP body.

Thanks for some help.

Full hub refers to the width of the hub. A full hub supports the entire width of the tire vs a partial hub that has part of the tire on the inside unsupported.

Big hub refers to the diameter of the hub. The actual diameter varies from company to company.

Big full hub would then work out to be a big diameter hub that supports the full width of the tire...

Tire is a .720" and .750".

Maybe you should go on the manufacturers website and start looking at their decription of hub sizes? If you were to run a JK Jumbo or whatever he call the largest size, its a .600" hub. A .720" overall diameter with a .600" hub would only leave you about 1/6" of rubber. Maybe that's enough?

Hey Rob!

Then why would you run a jumbo hub? Wouldn't you want to run a big hub or med hub for that app!

Gus:

My post wasn't to debate when and where to run hub sizes, but to get the orginal poster to think about hub size in relation to overall diameter. I don't believe the JK Jumbo hub is available in anything smaller than .790"? That doesn't mean that someone couldn't buy a pair and reduce its diameter on a tire truer. I'm just trying to potentally save somone an "OH" after buying a set and making them .720"

Since the track he is running on is an Engleman (likely SpeedZone), tire diameter has a direct relationship to rear ride height; usually a .750" tire is used for .063" clearance when a .720" is used for .032" clearance. If .032" is allowed, handling will be better than starting with .063".

I run on a Gerding King at The Track in Gaitherburg and I use hub diameter as a tuning tool. We only run Wonder or Thunder so we can use .600" hubs at .750" for better chute speed. However, on those rare instances where we can run .032", I'm likely to use a .500" or .525" hub size to maintain the same chute speed.

I do try to run the JK .600s on my Retro cars...

This was a great read for a "newer" racer trying to get up to speed, (no pun intended) about tire size and rim description. I knew it was some kinda code.

Thanks for posting!

Just glue a "rubber band" on your wheels in that case....;) LOL.

But one time I ran tires like that and it worked like a charm for that day and track.

Why?

There are guys who are much better at being able to tune a car to track conditions than I am. I'm not affraid to ask for help. I may have even begged Hershman for his opinion from time to time.
