I need a tutorial; I have some on order and it should arrive soon. Also bought the black backup paint for it. The train guy said you need to SPRAY it not brush it, but I want to do wheel inserts, why can I not just brush it on ?

Thank you, Sirs in advance :)

Because it is a lacquer and needs to be extra thin is why you cannot brush it. Shoot it right out of the bottle. You have that Paasche airbrush so by now you must have some experience with it.

Since you are doing inserts you want to shoot the gloss black a day in advance. Let it get thoroughly dry.

Then, shoot about three light coats of the Alclad right out of the bottle from different angles. Only takes two or three drops in the cup so you won't need to pour much in. Do not shoot too much on or the finish actually dulls to silver. Thinner the better and shinier.

I would find an object or two for tests and shoot the black on them too so you have something to practice shooting the Alclad prior to the inserts.
It's really very easy, just relax. :)

We use a brush all the time to paint injectors, headers etc...the spray cans work nice and we never back it with black.Pablo this stuff only works really good on lexan.

Super important!!! Make sure you really shake the bottle everytime you paint with it even if it has sat for 30 minutes. The pigment settles to the bottom and then you will just be painting clear. You also want to spray really thin and then back it. it isn"t as bright and chrome looking if you spray it to heavy.... I have had really good luck with it.....

J- Can you cover it with clear? I bought some chrome spray (rattle can) and the minute I sprayed gloss clear over it, it dulled to a siver/aluminum finish.

Not recommended in the modeling world Gary. If durability is required then go for the vacuum plating. Chrome Tech is who I use.

If you want something quick and dirty that has a pretty good reflective chrome effect try Krylon Original Chrome #1010 rattle can. I've used it for inserts, injectors, etc. and even use it on Lexan bodies for exterior details. Just spray it on some paper and brush it on. Doesn't stand up too well to a lot of handling but pretty good effect for the time involved. Kind of hard to find but most arts and crafts stores should carry it.

OK Jairus, I used the finest of my 3 Badger needles, shot a light (first of 2) coat of primer at 15 PSI.

Second coat of primer. Jairus informed me, no need to use airbrush on primer....any lacquer based gloss black paint will work as the primer.

Sorry the photo is of a simple "black colored insert", but one would have to have read and understood the entire post to see the relevance to it. :D Jairus also made clear the importance of the primer dying time to be at least 12 hours.

Alclad has two (2) chrome paints #107 for external,or over a black surface or #114 chrome for lexan, and I will back that with Parma black. Your inserts don't look like they have a black backing of any kind. dz

I know this is about inserts and those should be backed with black but when doing Lexan from the inside you back with white.

Bryan- That's the stuff I used. Looks great but I found the minute I sprayed clear on it, it dulled. So I guess the answer is, don't spray them with clear!

Gary, if you check the Alclad website, you'll now find they sell a clear that can be used over their chrome. :)

Experiment is done. I learned some things:

1. I should have used the # 107 paint for inserts. But, I'm glad I got the # 114 because most of my use of it will be inside Lexan, not external.. Thanks dz1.

2. Standard rattle can black gloss lacquer did NOT work well for me as primer........my own fault......applied too quick and too much....easy to do. Therefore chrome appears lumpy.
DSC04721.JPG

3. Another test of no primer, one coat of # 114, made a pair of inserts real nice.
DSC04720.JPG

Bottom line, if I get serious about using it externally, I'll get some # 107. Meantime, I'm going to shoot the # 114 at 18 PSI, no primer.

Thanks for all the help, gentlemen :)

Thanks, Bill! :good: I never saw that stuff before (clear Alclad). I like to clear these parts so they can be handled without immediately getting dull. I can't do much of this stuff anymore but when I do, I like to have it stay decent looking for a while. :)

Yes , I believe Roger at MidAmerica has both versions and also mirror gold which I feel when sprayed under a candy red gives a nice warm looking color as opposed to a cooler shade when using the chrome. Jairus would you agree, since I have seen your spray jobs and you have done some models in the past.

Here is a great video on Alclad. This one is for outside plastic, not inside Lexan.

My inserts turned out OK:
