Neat offer of a balance, epoxying, and a comm true by Thorp for $2.50. You actually had to buy the envelope first? I wonder if this deal has expired? :D

Well, I *think* it has expired.

Gil Gundersen, who did all the balancing back then, has moved to Tennessee. :)

John was a very nice guy and put out some good product, plus was very service oriented.

Also the balancer was dismantled when John closed down.

John Thorp is still alive and will be showing up at an R/C old-timer reunion June 17 in Los Angeles.

I found a few of those envelopes some years back, too. What a great memory.

John was/is an absolutely nice guy. One time at a major race (hotel race) in Texas we were talking at the track and he was mentioning that he thought I was light on horsepower. He offered an arm but I was chassis thrashing too and I just forgot about it. Late that evening, he called my room to remind me and suggested I come by his room and pick up an arm. I did, (a dbl. 28 IIRC) and qualified a sit-out for the Am Main the next day. Point being, he had plenty of racers on his team and didn't need to go out of his way for an amateur racer. But he did.

After that, I used him for my own balancing as well and had better results from his work.

Thorp (well, Gil anyway) balanced all of the armatures wound by Bill Steube. Thorp balancing was the best in the 1969 through 1973 era.

Saw and talked to Gil when he was at the Southern Shootout Retro Race. Good guy.

The Thorp envelopes used to be up on the walls of the raceways. I am not sure but I would imagine the shops got a cut out of it.

Just to get a date on these, stamps were 6 cents starting January 7th, 1968 until May of 1971, when the price jumped to 8 cents., so it is safe to say the offer expired Apr 30, 1971
