Can anyone tell me for certain the correct front and rear wheels that came on the Monogram '36 Ford? Looking for rim and tire diameter. Where the fronts and rears two different sizes?

Thanks.

Joe,

Here's some pics I got off the net, looks to be the same size front and rear... I could have sworn the kit included sponge slicks???

Yes, slot car Pete. Thanks for the pics. It's very hard to tell from the pics though.

I just got a car that I want to sell. It has the big 1-1/4" diameter tires with matching wheels all around. They look a little big. These are the real large ones used on the Duesy, etc.

I know Monogram made 1-1/4", 1-1/8", and smaller. Maybe 1" or 7/8" I thought these cars came with staggered sizes front to rear.

They both should be the same size front and rear. I had a '36 Ford and the Mercedes and they both had the same size tires. They were the treaded version on my cars... 1-1/4" diameter.

Joe,

Pretty sure all these cars had the 1-1/4" tires and 3/4" wheels.

The 1-1/8" tires and staggered sizes came when they released their sports cars: Ferrari, Scarab, etc.

Thanks, guys. I will leave it as is with the 1-1/4" all around. Looks strange to me but it is what it is. Someday when I get $1,700 or so extra bucks I'll pick up a MIB example.

Check out this THREAD which applies to the '36 Ford, too! So it depends on which chassis you are using , all 16D type chassis use the 1-1/4 , the 36D type you could use 1-1/16 if you want but around here for vintage racing we all use the 1-1/4.

Thanks, Gary. This is why I never say " they never made it that way " I learned while restoring 1:1 cars that just because you never saw it does not mean it does not exsist.

By the way, am I correct in stating that all the series 2 Monograms cars in this series had the 36D? This could be why they added smaller tires to pep them up a little. First ones had a 16D which revved a little higher, 36D had much more torque. Just a guess.

Yes all series ll cars had the 36D , most had the larger tires too. The smaller tires used on the last cars, would have lowered the center of gravity, were lighter , gave the car better handling and allowed more torque to be delivered so they would pep up these cars. I'm sure they would help the 16D cars too but I don't think they were ever used originally. Unless mint sealed versions were documented, most people would think these smaller tires were a modification by the owner/builder. I have seen stock 16D cars compete equally with the 36D cars on different tracks however the 16D's were prone to overheating and melting the commutators and end bells.

I'm not sure Monogram ever gave much thought to the how these cars handled or ran.1963 and they just wanted product out there as quick as the could,    The 16d wasn't much of a motor, and the 36D sticker added to the box later was just way to draw attention to those kits again.
