Friday report by Philippe de Lespinay
Retro Coupes Races
Philippe de Lespinay was tech inspector and all cars passed with no issues.
Here, Dennis Hill is filling his entry and looks ready for business with a "get out of my way" posture.
Most of the coupes have now been through tech:
Concours judging was unanimous: these 3 cars were the best. The winning entry was Mill Conroy's beautiful Lola T70 MK2B, with Jay Henry's Chaparral and someone's Porsche 908 (please let me know so that I can put your name on it...

Retro Coupe "B" Race
The "B" race ready to go:
The racers are awaiting the beep from race director Barney Poynor:
The race quickly turned into a duel between Tim Neja and Alex Freund, with Mike Aguirre trying his best to hang with them.
Well, Tim made it to the "A".
Retro Coupe "A" Race
The "A" race was the usual Duran Benefit, with the SoCal ace blitzing everyone, with only Bryan Warmack even close. Mill salvaged a third placing by working hard at it, barely edging Phil Nyland. Tim Neja did his best but those guys up front are tough...

Retro Pro Races
There were plenty of racers to contest the fastest SCRRA racing class. Driving these Retro pro cars is like driving a mid-1970s wing car without... wings! The lap times would have been world records then!
The cars are lined up here for qualifying and Concours judging:
Concours saw Philippe's super lightweight car win it, with its Noose painted body. Mike Low and Craig Correia were runner ups.
As often and along with Mike Boemker, Mill Conroy and Barney Poynor, Alex Freund acted as race director. Thanks Alex!
Qualifying went swiftly and well. Here, Texan Richard Hofer tries his luck at breaking the sound barrier:
Retro Pro qualifying, King track, 21 entries:
1-Duran Trujillo--------------3.342"
2-Doug Matthes-------------3.385"
3-Jerry Johnson-------------3.386"
4-Tim Neja--------------------3.426"
5-Philippe de Lespinay----3.426"
6-Jay Henry------------------3.472"
7-Dennis Hill-----------------3.502"
8-Jonathan Forsyth--------3.502"
9-Tore Anderson------------3.533"
10-Mike Boemker-----------3.537"
11-Craig Correia------------3.538"
12-Alex Freund--------------3.559"
13-Bryan Warmack---------3.564"
14-Mike Brannian-----------3.573"
15-T.J. Albu------------------3.588"
16-John Hegedus-----------3.602"
17-Mike Aguirre-------------3.635"
18-Jim Watterson-----------3.639"

20-Dennis Samson---------3.893"
21-Mike Low-----------------4.053"
Retro Pro "C" Race
The "C Guys" ready to scoot:
Da machines:
This one was simply dominated by our track owner, Jim Watterson. He took two heats to sort it out and then, he was gone.
At the end, we got this:
Richard Hofer and John Hegedus share the glory.
Jim chose not to move up and to take care of his raceway instead,
Retro Pro "B" Race
Next, the "B Guys" prepare for mortal combat to make it to the "A".
Their race cars chomping at the bit:
Another fast race with its share of little drama, and here we go:
Alex overwhelms Craig Correia and Jonathan Forsyth and moves up to the "A".
Retro Pro "A" Race
The fastest Retro drivers in the West have already pulled their controllers from their holsters and in a few seconds, the fight at OK Corral will begin.
Hold your horses for a few more seconds:
This one had the only "ugly incident" of the weekend, when a racer's car got unfortunately put into a wrong lane by a track marshal. The race director made a decision that was contested by the racer and words were unfortunately exchanged, not something that the SCRRA ever wants to see again.
In the meantime, a fierce battle took place between Jerry Johnson and Duran Trujillo, with Tim Neja also in the hunt. Eventually, Duran disciplined driving made the difference when Jerry ran into some trouble, and they finished in that order, Philippe de Lespinay driving a no-fault (but not fast enough!) in 4th place.
Actual race finishing for all the Friday races will be posted as soon as... we get them!
Saturday
Saturday report by Nesta Szabo:
Well here is a small part of the SWC race report, to much happened and it was great time to see guys coming from Japan, Texas, Arizona and the guys from Northern California.
Lets start out with the guys that came to visit BPR, we all liked Tex great guy and good racer, happy to have a chance to meet him.
Then it was great to see Haruki again and he is even better then in the past.
We had some guys coming down from North Cali like Jeff Bell.
Jay Henry who came up from SD to put some life into the gig.
Got my fair share of it.
Haruki's friends from Japan.
This are some of the guys that came down to BP to race and had a good time with the locals.
Mark Wampler:
Mike Kravitz:
It was a great bunch of guys that came to BP to race and they sure where part of the Southern California gig, lets hope they will come again for a fun day's of racing.
Gentleman lets get back to the CanAm race on July 14th.
This is what we all raced for:
I would like to include some of the best racers in Southern California as well, lets start with Duran.
Mill Conroy.
"John" Tore Anderson.
Dennis Samson and upcoming hot shoot Jimmy Bling.
Philippe and Cukras.
Bryan Warmack.
JC, Terry and John.
Tech was perormed by Cukras and big thanks for doing it and thanks to Philippe to check the motors.
I will break this report up for the guys that only want to see the CanAm top and bottom.
The Can AM cars and we had a entry of 36 racers, all handout motors.
More to come, I need to download more pics.

The track was according to Duran Trujillo who is at this time the most competent and most successful of our racers, perfect on both days, but for me it was a bit loose Saturday for the Can Am races, while more stuck for the F1 on Sunday.
The power supply worked perfectly and only a car that had a broken lead wire that shorted the track caused the power supply to fall on safe mode for about 5 seconds.
There were zero motor failures and I personally ran the same motor in my Can Am car, then did two races (B and A) with my F1 car, and the motor is still just fine. It never really got hot, and I never used either a heat sink or a cooling stick between race segments.

Although I was next-to-last in F1, I certainly enjoyed myself....
Thank you, Dokk & Jim, for covering my entry....
It made the weekend pretty special, being able to race F1 cars w/ my friends....
Many thanks to everyone who attended.... Without your participation, this series of racing retro-inspired slot cars wouldn't exist...
To those who found the track conditions had changed on Sunday morning, I'm sorry if having a clean track wasn't part of what you had expected...
SCRRA officials felt that having a clean, freshly-glued track for both Saturday & Sunday was the best way to insure fair racing conditions...
Obviously, the fact that the track would be cleaned before the F1 race was run should've been conveyed to all racers....
I'm certain that these issues will be addressed in further events....
Again, many thanks to all those who attended this event, & I look forward to seeing everyone at our next big racing event....
Thank you, & good racing....
