A good friend of mine raced at Glen Oaks years ago. He asked me if anybody had pics of the interior or exterior. I know some of you guys like Sandy and Howie probably raced there. It would make him very happy :)

:) I raced there a lot but don't have any pictures and don't recall seeing any. Perhaps Roger can find some in the old NY Miniature Racing News newspapers.

That would be cool. I'm sure photos of the Oak are rare.

Hi,

I remember this raceway very well. I have something like photographic memory with these things, and clearly can visualize times at Glen Oak like it was yesterday. I see Roy Wong with his full suspension car, Gunther Faas the gearmeister, Fred Correnti, and of course Howie and the usual suspects.

Unfortunately, I have no photos, sigh... It was a very fast track.

All the Best,

Sandy

Thanks so far guys. Sandy, you were one of my best hopes on this. Perhaps some others may chime in. I don't remember reading to much about this track in Car Model etc. Perhaps there may be something in the local slot related papers.

Hi Mike. I looked through my issues of New York Miniature News. I couldn't find anything on Glen Oaks. They were not part of the Inter Store league and there name and address is not o any of the issues I have. Sorry.
Unlike Sandy"s photographic memory ( HI Sandy ) I cant remember ever being there.

:) It is strange but I can't think of any reason that there seems to be no pictures ever taken there. This place had a very big presence in the 60's racing scene on Long island.

Stretching the memory cells, there was a Car Model or Cobra race in the '67-69 timeframe. Anglewinders were in use but this was a Formula 1 class and only inlines were allowed. Bodies I had were a Dynamic Ferrari and someone’s Lotus 49. Since I was with a car load from CT it would be a reasonably large race and should have been reported in a magazine.

Maybe this provides a starting point.

Glen Oaks Raceway was my home track. The Jones owned and ran a very clean well stocked raceway that hosted the NY Dyna-Rewind race and a Car Model race. I have a couple of photos taken at races there but unfortunately no photos of the tracks.

If I ever get the time I know I have pictures of Glen Oaks raceway somewhere. My dad bought out the place when it shut down.

I remember he took pictures of the tracks and fixtures so he could sell them before we dissembled them. It was the first time I had ever worked on a track. It was immaculate inside, the tracks could have almost been sold as new. They had quite a large inventory that took days to go through. We actually used the "Glen Oaks Raceway" sign on our building in Farmingdale.

Of course I did a lot of racing at Glen Oaks and also at your place in Farmingdale on the Hillclimb. Did that track come from Glen Oaks?

Mike:

It is good to see an old friend even if it is just online.

No, the track did not.

My dad opened the store in Farmingdale in 1969, well before Glen Oaks went out of business. Our Hillclimb came from somewhere in the Bronx. If I was smarter maybe I would have lobbied my dad to switch tracks. Our Hillclimb we in pretty bad shape by the mid-1970s. In fact you could stick your thumb in the slot it was so worn out.

You might have started racing there after my dad hired Bob Emott to redo the whole track. You could tell by the color of the track surface: black in the beginning and light grey after Bob revamped the track. Bob also rewired and rebraided the track and it was probably better than new. Bob did an amazing job.

Peter,

If you could find your Glen Oaks photos, it would make a lot of us geezers very happy.

Cheers,
