I raced at Grapevine just one time... around 1970 or so. We ne'er-do-well slot racers were looked askance at, walking up and down the block where the track was. I was only verbally maligned one time, in Brenham, on our way to a race in Killeen(my very last slot car race in my former life).

Was it a red track? The one with the humps in the straight.

If you ever ran on a Red you wouldn't forget it!  Humps down the straight and a short straight in the middle of the donut.
