For the amount of the check I just wrote the contractor for putting in the French drainage system, I could have bought 3 Gary Gerding tracks :shok: :dash2: :laugh2: .

I still buying a track...no matter what :dance3:

Hi Rick!

Congratulations on your retirement from your "job". I know you'll never retire from building slot cars.

Are you also a Datsun BRE fan?! From the looks of the stacked BRE Datsun model cars it looks like it. I too am a Datsun fan having built quite a few of the real cars.

I know your new place will definitely be a pleasure to work in - congratulations again. Hope to see you at Eddie's sometime in the future?!?!!?

The yellow Revell Datsun 510 “Brock Buster” kit in the picture is a model of my real car. I sold it to Pete Brock with everything done but the motor and paint which he finished. I met up with Pete years later and he told me, “That was a great car. I sold it to the president of the Ferrari Club in Southern California”. I sure wish I’d kept it……

With Pete Brock's help I had a 510 Trans AM car built for the street when BRE was racing in the series. It had camber and caster adjustable "heim joint" front suspension with altered attachment points. The rear suspension was adjustable and also had altered attachment points to reduce negative camber gain that occurred after lowering the ride height. The work was done by Troutman and Barnes (builders of the first Scarab and Chaparral I). BRE crew chief Trevor Harris help sort out the suspension on their improvised skid pad next to their race shop.

The interior was completely stripped and redone. Race car fabricator Bruce Burness built the welded in half roll cage, racing seat and head restraint. I went to Simpson for the racing seat belt and shoulder harness. The hood was fiberglass as were the flared front fenders. The rear fenders had fiberglass flares added and the inner fenders were "tubbed". Pete Brock donated the fiberglass parts to the project.

The wheels were magnesium American Mag racing wheels same as the race cars used. The same thing with the tires. I ran Goodyear or Firestone racing rubber same as the race cars. There were no real high performance street tires like there are today. Running racing tires on the street gave me a killer advantage over most street cars. I just had to put up with ZERO traction in the wet, constant flat tires and tire replacement every few thousand miles!

Hi Rick,

That's a great story!!! Can't wait to share it with my Datsun buddies. Last year I corresponded briefly by email with Pete regarding his "Datzilla" 510. After the BRE Trans Am days, I got to know Pete's crew chief Mac Tilton quite well. He built a few of my motors and I remember driving thru the night to get to El Segundo, where his shop was located years ago and always got some free "leftover" Datsun Comp parts because Mac told me he was clearing out all the Datsun stuff to make room for Nascar and F1 race cars parts he was now fabricating at that time.

Thanks for sharing that great story! I don't know if you're aware that Pete started up the BRE name once again offering lots of memorabilia!

Rick, I noticed you have a Carlisle Magnetize r. I also have one and would like to ask you a few questions. Ive noticed that several people put the cans in differently, some with the can horizontal and others vertical or perpendicular to the jaws. Which is the correct way. Also I race Retro puppy dogs which are sealed. Is there a way to zap the mags with a complete motor..I would like to frefresh the mags after a race.

Last Friday, while waiting at a light, a bone-stock Datsun 510 (2 door) pulled up next to me. It even had the blue and yellow plates on it. I wonder if the guy gets tired of the offers to buy it. :boredom:

I've been doing my magnets vertical with a slug (loose or in the can) as they fit nicely in the curved notches of the Zapper.

Ernie,

My pictures are "pre-digital" so I'd have to remove them from the album and scan them. I found this picture on the internet. It must have been taken at Pete's shop after I sold him the car. The front fenders, rear flares and hood are unpainted. I put the bumpers on to sell the car. I never ran bumpers....too much dead weight. :D

Along with the the smallest cat in the shelter we thought we should team her up with the biggest......five year old Charlie. He's 18 pounds of "road hugging weight". Kind of the Pontiac of the cat world:

Yes, I really miss my old home track and being able to go to Eddie's Slot Car World..........

I've been working on the garage. I'm setting up a tool cart with a Micro Mark spray booth on top and room for a compressor and air brush and.....but no track yet :fool:
