What can be done to keep this class alive? Rule changes?,less body thickness?wider width?,lower front end height?, cutting more fender clearance?= more bodies would work. Lighter weight? .What should be done?...seems this class has been handicapped with present rules?

It's not fading up here John. Things are just fine with it. We have seen growth with it at each race. Last year we averaged just under 18 entrants per event. We have run it once in the series so far and had 20 entrants. It is one of the tougher classes to drive so that may be why some are reluctant to include it.

:) John--this class is very alive and IMO there is nothing wrong with the rules as written!!! These cars handle great and are fun to drive.

Whatever your directors promote will be popular. Stock cars are a very fun class, drive differently than anything else and just a blast on Ovals or Road courses. I agree ALL wheelwells should be allowed to be radiused like the last few new bodies are allowed and then every body can be used and its a diverse field of cars. Get the other particpants to lobby your director(s) to add the class in your region....................

Rick no lobbying required, stock cars are already raced in his region.

Like Rick said, Ralph the fenders could be radiused on other bodies to include more bodies. I agree.

If the number of available bodies is the issue (right now there are 4 or 5 that work well) then that's nit-picking IMO. It's a tougher to build a good handling chassis and trickier to drive. THAT's the real reason.

If a region chooses to open up the wheel wells then they are not following IRRA rules. What most have found is that 3 to 4 bodies work best and of these 2 have the larger wheel openings like the real cars did. The other two accept the width allowed and have worked fine for the last 3 years.

The problem with allowing the opening of wheel wells on some of the bodies is that at 3 inches the tires are going to stick out and that not allowed either.

:) There are at least 4 bodies that fit and work well without cutting the wheel wells. Just build a chassis and go race like we have been doing for the last 5 years with no problems!!!

Ok here we go again. LMAO. Number 1 no race car on the Big Track circut had fully radiused wheel well openings and I put pictures up the last time we went down this road. They were enlarged(same opening profile) but never full view as we have. secondly NASCAR allowed short track cars( fully radiused wheel wells) to compete on the big tracks with their radiused wheel wells to fill up the field. PO permitted opening up the narrower cars and they looked real kool. Everyone kept them even with the body, to boot. It was nice to see the Farilane and GTO and 66 Charger on the starting grid. It's now down to a couple three bodies and the others are just approved by not used. No long pissin contest on this end, it boils down to my opinion and what I think looks nice on the track. Every PO racer knew that when they went to another region what they needed to do with their stock car to be legal and never a complaint from any of them..................

Again, that's a minor sticking point. The 68 charger, the daytona, the Parma cyclone and now the new o/s talledega all work, and the Fairlane fits but has fallen out of favor up here because we race road courses. Unless you will only race a Chevy body, there's something that will work :)

I know there are some Retro East guys that don;t run them because they are harder to drive, but the guys that have been working on chassis and set-up the last 2-3 years have made this a fun, competitive class. I honestly think that development on these cars has advanced even quicker than the other classes. There were plenty of them at the R4 a couple years ago, and a good field at the Southern shootout this year.

You can;t expect them to race like a Can-Am...they are different and that's the whole point

Good info guys, this weekend will be my first stock car retro race looking forward to it. Very familiar with scale 4.5 ,was just wondering why retro stock car rules were not more in line with the other classes ,,body thickness ,front chassis height ,width ,weight...I don't mean to change rules .just saying more people would run this class if the cars were easier to drive IMO. ..I don't care how hard they are to drive..I'll race whatever, just speaking for someone just starting, not me.. 4.5 classes have always been my favorite. I hope it stays on...thanks.

I wish we had a Trans-Am Retro class. 4.25" maybe WB with 72 or earlier Trans-Am bodies.

Start one up and run it locally if there is that much interest. Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, and those Javelins!

I have a nice 65 Mustand body that has been sitting on my bench the last 2 years. It's produced by Vacuum Formed Creation, and they also make a nice 67(?) Camaro. But these are pretty scale, which means they are a bit under 3" wide. The chassis would probably end up being like a 1/32 stock car chassis

If anyone would like to build a chassis to go under it, I would be glad to send it to them, provided they post the results on the blog. I think they would be cool, but I have found I just don;t have the time for a special project like this.

The 4-1/2" stock car class that we run at Holly Hill is an awesome event. I always look forward to this event. Next time is Feb 2013.
