Attached you will find a picture of at least most of the A Main from the famous Coca-Cola race in Springfield, OH, in the early '70s. It is virtually a "Murderer's Row" of "who was who" in slot racing back then. Joel Montague (back then known as "Monte") told me latter that it was the race that "made" Pooch Armatures and by default I guess made purple the color of the hobby by default. Don't know I would go that far, but I would say it helped.

I'll post others as time goes on. They are of varying quality since the original negatives were damaged in the developing process. Most of the pictures (all the good ones) were taken by Ken Macdowell of Parma International. Preserving a race that did a lot for slot racing by a guy who did the same.

I'll leave the names of the drivers not listed and leave it to the slotbog readers give their best shot.

What was the name of the track? Does it live on anywhere else?

I may have raced against some of those guys at Mini Motor Speedway in Beavercreek, OH.

Tom,

I don't think you raced against these guys. They are all from out of state.

I remember the hotel next to the track where Lee Gilbert and I stayed, the worst fleabag I have ever been in. The cockroaches were the largest I have seen in north America!

The raceway was filthy, crowded, and the track was awful. Joel did a great job, helped by the Team Pooch-Camen boys. It was a riot!

Lee and I drove my N600 Honda mini car there, something I would never do today...  :dash2:

Well let's see. I recognize Joel Montague, Mitch Kiel, Bob Cotton, Mike Steube, Lee Gilbert for sure. Maybe Steve Bogut just over Mike Steube's right shoulder?

Straights are for fast cars. Turns are for fast drivers.

The raceway was a complete **** hole. Closed the next day.

Is that the track that had the railroad tracks real close by it where guys were putting their cars on the train track right before the train passed by?

Ed "Edsel" Sohl was talking about this I race just this past weekend. I believe he said it was the race Joel won with his car and that it was the day he quit running for Camen.

Bad blood there? I only remember that we (Left Coast dudes) ate it from lack of sleep, lack of will, lack of good preparation, and we were more interested in chasing skirts around the town...

We were lost in Ohio, far away from the comfortable arms of California tootsies...

Besides our slot cars sucked! :laugh2:

And they were California boys which then meant a bit more to the local girls in these "remote" places then than now.

And yes, that is Bogut.

Overhead "Where's Waldo?" shot #1 from the Coca Cola race. It was certainly the "gathering of the clans"?

"Race Queens". They just happened to be two girls walking by and were wondering what was going on. The Coke sign they are holding was the trophy and you can see Joel Montague holding his check for $1,000 which was first prize.
