Still working on it. It's like writing the Webster and then finding out that things need to be corrected on the fifth re-read on page 812...

 

The book so far has almost 400,000 words and 350 pages of text alone (not a single picture in that total), and it is not over yet...

Writing a book is a major undertaking, especially to the level of detail and accuracy that PdL is contemplating in his book. Not sure about his sourcing for photographs but that will be a major headache for me getting all the permissions and what not.

I think the last Philippe posted, the writing is done and only photo work remains, which maybe is more work than the writing.

If someone were to write a book on "The History of Retro Racing", it would let PDL off the hook. Let's see, it should only take 5 or 6 years to document 12 years of history.

Writing a "picture book" is rather easy and can be done very quickly. There are TONS of "picture books" in automotive libraries. Very few tell an actual story, most of them are comic books with pictures. Virtually all books relating to toys are so poor in establishing a story, it is a bit pathetic.

Most books about racing cars are just that: tons of already formatted pics, a few caption words and voila. Sorry, not my style.

Writing an encyclopedia about facts and events that took place over 50 years ago is a bit tougher, especially when the writer has (much) better things to do.

 

This book was written and completed like 6 years ago (and will require readers to actually read it, because images are sacrificed for actual content), but the photography was not, and much new information has surfaced in the past 6 years. It means lots of new writing, correcting, adding and... subtracting. The photography capture in difficult circumstances in the middle of construction, dust, plaster and continuous interruptions was simply not fun, and I don't like it when it is not fun, this is when I go home to do fun things. I took over 5,000 pictures, to select 750. At one time, one of the construction workers stole the cameras, the Canon EOS bag containing the backup card with thousands of pictures, that I had to take over again. You like it so far?

 

It was really fun.

 

Now that "better things to do" have been reduced to "less of it," now that construction is at last nearly done, there is hope I can complete the work, images and all, before the end of the year. Then it can go to production (90 days) and to print. In fact it will likely be ready just in time for a "grand opening" of the finished LASCM museum, by "invitation only" (because of limited space and parking space).

 

So in the meantime, do whatever you have to do, will the book order to your grandchildren, whatever.

 

It will be done when it will be done.
