My latest scale racer for our German Championship is ready to race! I built the car from our own brand-new Lola T163 kit, used a Schöler Striker series chassis, Wiesel (Ortmann) tires, Fox motor, aluminum rims, 3 mm axles, own JP gear yellow (41t), and a 12t pinion. Enjoy the pics of Chuck Parson's beautiful Simoniz sponsored Can-Am racer of 1969, where this Carl Haas owned car was the best ranked Lola (3rd place in the final Can-Am standings) of the season.

Regards,

Dieter

VERY NICE detailing! I have a lot of experience in detailing like this and it is NOT easy. Tedious and time-consuming to say the least.
This Lola is really beautiful. :good: :good: :good:

YES, this guys work is FABULOUSO! Been looking at his stuff for a few years now and have no idea how to really get close to it without working at it 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. Always a pleasure to look at and enjoy.

Thanks, Jens!!!

Hi Dieter,
Gorgeous job as usual. However I must make an important correction: this is NOT a T163 but the one-off T165, now owned by our very own Scott Bader. The T163 has a rear body tail section enclosing the whole back of the car. The T165, driven by Chuck Parsons for Carl Haas with Simoniz sponsorship, has the opened back as shown on your model.
Here is Scott in the car a couple of months ago at Sears Point raceway in California:

Hello Dieter,

Like everyone here has said, it's incredible work.

I'm also a bit confused too especially after looking up the THIS LINK on the Lola T163:

There's a picture of your Lola T163 with number 14 and Simoniz livery.

I shot another picture of a T163 this weekend (note: closed end).

Posted Image
Year/Marque: 1969 Lola T163
Chassis No: N/A
Disp: 8358cc
Driver: Brian Blain

Posted Image
Simoniz Lola T70

Cool, right? Although it's hard to see in the picture it has the Simoniz logo on rear wing and body work.

Although I didn't see Scott Bader's Simoniz Lola, here's how it was officially listed with the Can-Am entries (Group 5B):
Number 11
Year/Marque: 1969 Lola T163
Chassis No: SL 163/21
Disp: 4881cc
Driver: Scott Bader

Although I lack a lot of historical expertise I would have to guess that Phillipe's probably right.
The Lola T165 may have been a T163 variant with a smaller displacement engine?
I hope this info helps?... and it's fascinating right?

Your craftsmanship, as well as your web site itself, are among the best out there!

Like many before, including Scott, we all believed that it was an evolved 163. But the former works mechanics Ike Smith and Jerry Entin met us at Sears and Fontana and told us the actual story of the car. It was a one-off with the big block, built for the 1969 Can-Am. The chassis plate actually says T165.
The production 165s were quite different and had a partially-enclosed rear cowling and lower wings. You may see one HERE.
You can read the story about Chuck Parsons and the T165 in this very interesting thread.

Here is a picture of the car at Riverside that year:

Posted Image

And the comment by Jerry:

Here is the car Lola T165 he finished 2nd in. Colin Riley and Ike Smith working on car. Engine by Gary Knutsen-Chaparral big block Aluminum Chevy 494 with over 700 hp. This car was clocked at 195 mph through the speed traps at Riverside.
photos by Gil Munz

However Scott's car was NOT at Monterey as the organisers kind of lied to Scott about his other entries and he basically but politely told them that he would not come, so the car stayed home.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for your statements and some very interesting historical points on the car.

I like the Lola T70 shown in the pic very much too, and built it a couple of years ago. Have a look at the front, with all that Riverside dust on Skip Scott's car...

These big bangers can be seen in Europe sometimes inn the Nürburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix and in Goodwood, England.

Another masterpiece, Dieter! It just doesn't get much better than this. For those of us on this side of the Atlantic that would like to see this great work firsthand and meet the man in person, we will be doing our best to get Dieter on the grid for the 2008 Panamerican Plafit Championship next year in Chicago, as he is also one of the top racers in Europe. We are also considering having Dieter host a 'pre-race' workshop on model car building. Let us know if and what would interest you.

Hey Rick, Jairus, Phillippe, Mark, and all the other champions: you have inspired me with all your great work, too. Rick's chassis and Steve's chassis wonders, Jairus' and Noose's body painting (art!!!), Philippe's knowledge and help all the years, Mark's efforts to successfully install scale racing in Canada - gents, that's what this forum is all about! Great articles, great knowledge sharing, nice people, and I'm always exited what is new to read, day by day.

Thanks!

Dieter

Philippe,

Then you had a maximum of seven minutes left for putting the driver in, fixing the rear spoiler and the front diaplane, painting three numbers on the body, and finally mounting the body during the tech inspection! Compliments!

Hi Dieter,
I took a look at your site. Your cars are the best cars I have ever seen! Let me ask you this - I have very basic and average modeling skills. Are your resin kits ones that someone of my limited skills would be able to create into a good running car? I have turned many plastic model kits into slot cars, but have yet to try a resin kit.
Thank you,

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for looking into my gallery. I started with injection-molded kits first, and it took "years" to start my first resin kit. Resin kits are of good surface, meanwhile, and the work before starting to use the primer is not as long as a couple of years ago. You should wash, sand, and wash again, then put some silicone remover over the body and let it dry. Then you're ready to spray the primer.
As you see, there is no big difference between plastic and resin, it's only a bit more time for preparation.
The difficulties of resin kits are that the perfect fit of e.g. a Tamiya plastic body is NOT with resin kits. Here you need a bit more time, but give your first resin or GfK (glassfibre stiffened kinda plastic) a chance...
Just ask, if you have more questions.
Regards
Dieter "DJ" Jens
