I finished second in the Hot Consi in this race but spun a pinion while in a move-up spot in the Semi. I was running an armature that Howie wouldn't run because it ran too hot!

In 1968 i had to run Cobra motors instead of the Bob Kean motors that were the best, due to company policy changes at Cobra.  In almost every race that year i spun a pinion because there was no solder that would hold them on. They just got so hot the pinions would just fly off. I guess you found this out also Fred. lol.

Were you guys using 60/40 or a silver solder on your pinions? I got some high-temp silver solder from Russ Boyington in the early 70's & have been using it on pinions ever since.

Yes, exactly, the car stopped when the pinion spun.  If I waited a couple of laps the solder would cool and I could go another few laps............not racing Gross and Cukras that way!

Brownells sells some very hi-temp (640 to 650 deg. F) soft silver solder,  38000 psi tensile strength, for 14.99 per 1 oz. roll.  That's about 200 deg. F higher temp than regular Stay-Brite silver solder.  It's 95% cadmium/5% silver, so don't breathe the fumes or use it on food preparation surfaces.

Should all but eliminate pinion spinning in anything (except maybe some GRP 7 cars).

What, that you shouldn't breathe cadmium fumes?  Everyone needs an excuse to eat more cilantro ...

The Harris Group also sells Stay Brite 8, (6%) a higher temp solder than their normal 4% Stay Brite. It's often used for soldering the pillow blocks of steel wing car chassis.
