One of the racers, Will Brinkley, put up an added incentive for this race. He put up a plaque and $50 in cash to the top three racers with the most laps ($30 for the most and a plaque, $10 for the racers with the second and third most laps) run in the three races yesterday!
1) Ralph Thorne - 774 laps
2) Chris Barnes - 755 laps
3) Will Brinkley - 749 laps (one lap more than Jay Guard)
Turn-out was a little light but the racers who came out to the Retro South race yesterday put on a great show! Some of the best side-by-side racing I have ever seen! In the last heat of the F1 race, Ralph Thorne and Gil Gundersen were on the same lap and next to each other on the track (Ralph in orange and Gil in the blue lane). To watch them race for lap after lap 6 to 18 inches apart for over two minutes, until Ralph got caught in a wreck with around 40 seconds left, was awesome! I know everyone at the track was excited about the show these guys put on.
In the Can-Am race, in the last heat Gil was ahead by about a half of lap and Ralph made a run but he fell a little short.
I want to thank the out-of-town drivers that came to race with us: Brandon Cates, Tommy Flythe, Jay Guard, Chris Barnes, James Merriman, and Ralph Thorne. You guys sure are really great racers and we enjoyed having you!
To the local racers from Central TN Raceway, thanks for showing up and racing! You guys are also great racers and you showed it.
Ralph or I will post some pics soon!
One other point I would like to share with you racers here on Slotblog. As many of you know we hosted the Music City Shootout IRRA race here three weeks ago. It was the first IRRA Premier race to use hand-out tires. I want to post the difference in qualifying times between the two races.
Retro South Stock Car, in race - 5.109 secs, Shootout Stock Car, in race - 5.211: .102 secs slower on hand-out tires
Retro South F1 - 4.356, Shootout F1 - 4.379: .023 secs slower on hand-out tires
Retro South Can-Am - 4.303, Shootout Can-Am - 4.356: .053 secs slower on hand-out tires
I am not trying to convince any other tracks to use the hand-out tires. I just wanted to show the numbers! I know one driver said to me it wasn't worth the time thrashing and the money buying tires to go .two hundredths faster. Something to think about!

Sounds like a great race; wish I could afford to travel... Hope I can make it to Abbeville.
Your idea and implementation of hand-out tires has been great.

Ben
Thanks for positive comment on the hand-out tires. Like I posted, I am not trying to get all the tracks to go to that. But I think if the racers ever try a race with hand -out tires they will enjoy the racing much more. Lees money spent on tires and less time to get ready to race!
Maybe I will see you in Abbeville!

Rick,
At first glance I was opposed to the idea of hand-out tires. But reading the comments in the post-race discussion about this, I've changed my stance.
I'm not sure how viable it is for a race like the R4 where you have 60+ entries per class for three classes, but it's something I wouldn't mind trying.
Sometimes simplifying things does make for a more enjoyable time.

John,
I agree with you. The R4 may not be suited for hand-out tires. It isn't for everyone.
Looking forward to you seeing you again soon!
Rick.
